e-Ark X-400 - MX400 > Aluminum Center Hub is a MUST!!!!

The plastic center hub is the weak link for the x400/mx400 and is a topic that keeps returning. It has failed for many people in flight. When it does fail, it takes out the entire head with it. The fix is to get the aluminum center hub or replace the whole head with a Trex head.

I tried to have a different post stickied to the top of this forum, but it had links to vendors making it an invalid candidate for a sticky. Hope this will do. Thanks Mark.

VERY DISSATIFIED...

my center broke...and the WOODEN blades were un-damaged....

was a small brush with the ground...and wham!

also, the pro version....the motor is weak and the pinions supplied woulden even fit...luckley i had a trex pack and was able to do..

BUT, my first experiance is....well...now i have 30/40 bucks to replace, i dont like this heli...

I love my x400. I just didn't like the plastic center hub. With an all metal head, this heli flies like a dream. The pro package is just a way for them to sell all the stuff you dont need.

maybe if we can get enough poeple to e-mail helli-max or tower hobbies maybe they would change the head to metal when you buy the pro .or try to get them to recall them . does anyone remember when tower sent out the letters on the nexus 30 blade grips ? all you had to do was call them and they sent out new ones i know that may be wishfull thinking but after it has happened to me it sucks, and pricing out the parts. its cheaper to buy another pro. i do like the way they fly as I'm a raptor fan

Headblock

I agree with crazylarry, I have sent my letters of to towerhobbies, heli-max and 3 vendors that I know of stating the poor quality of the headblock. I think the vendors should also back what they sell. I got my mx400 with both canopy mounts broke and heliproz wouldn't even replace them. Said I had to got thru Great Planes which has produced nothing so far and it's been 5 days. I'm sorry but this just pisses me off when you buy something and the store won't make it right. Seems to be getting worse with on-line stores.

I always buy from a local hobby store if I can. I only look on line if they are out of stock or dont carry the part. Nothing is better than having a shop within your reach. A LHS is also great for finding help and support. That doesn't mean that they will always replace parts like this center hub, but they should be able to warn about it if they have experience with this heli.

has anyone tried boiling the head block to see if that would make it more resistant to breakage?

Hi jschenck,
i don't think that somebody wants to test it out. The metal center hub is about 15$, a broken x400 is even a little bit more expensive.
But if you test it, please tell me.

cold here in germany

if I ever bend my metal one I'll try boiling the plastic one. But this might be a good tip for people who are having trouble locating an ARK-220 and still want to fly.

well i did it again had another break . on one of my 400's . I had put one back together using the stock head. just couldn't wait any longer to fly . the weather was perfect . tower has the metal head on back order. i also have another 400 that i put a t-rex head on from the swash plate up and also i'm installing the micro helli's tail unit on it . i'm just not done with installing the the rest of the tail parts yet hope it flys better than the stock 400 the t-rex metal head is very smoothe compared to the stock 400 head

Hey Blind, who told you that they come with the new head? I just called Helimax and they said that the pro still comes with the plastic head.

Just an FYI, the new style metal hub with the bearings can be a bit weak also. I bought 2 of them and gave a buddy of mine one for his. He had a minor blade strike when he tipped the heli over too far and a the hub broke in half right in the center of the holes the bearings sit in.

There really isn't much meat in the bearing area, so I think it safe to say that the hub itself cannot be expected to hold up during an impact but I don't think we have to worry about breaking apart in flight.

I am still flying mine with no problems, but I do check it periodically around the bearings to make sure everything is ok.
