e-MS Composit Hornet > Ball links & connecting rod longer than 20mm!

Hi all,

I am putting together a Hornet 2 and have hit a problem with the connecting rods in step 5 of the construction guide.

The guide says there should be an edge to edge length of 20mm between the ball joints, even with the joints screwed all the way up the connecting rod until the parts E079 and E021 are touching I can only get down to about 24mm (Yes I have used the shorter ball links at the top!).

Is it just a case of filing down the longer ball joints until I have got the required 20mm setting (plus a little extra for adjustments) or do I need to obtain some more of the shorter links (E079)?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Rich

Where are you measuring from/to. They mean for you to measure from the edge of the holes closest to each other and not the tips of the links. Look at the pictures manual. It's an odd point to measure from, usually we measure from hole center to hole center or tip to tip.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the quick responses.

Here are a couple of pics, one of the MS handbook diagram and one of one of the two links. In the photo of the link against the rule it looks as if the link is about the correct length but it must be an optical illusion created by the camera as it is too long.

I am measuring the link as described in the manual i.e. from inner edge to inner edge.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Hmm.. I just assembled one myself to see and mine comes out right. But your's looks close enough. As long as they are both the same length and close to 20mm, it should be fine. Just remember these links have a front and back side so you need to have them facing the right way for snapping onto the balls.

I am curious why they won't acheive the correct length though. Like I said, mine went together to the correct length perfectly. If you're really concerned about it, then you could shave a couple mm off the longer ends. I'd make sure you are indeed using the correct combination of links though.

Your short link does look a little long to me.. are you sure you don't have a shorter one around or used it somewhere else? On the servo links maybe?

Thanks for the reply C.C.,

The short link is one of two which are the shortest links that came with the kit, there are 5 of the longer links, two for the connections between the flybar & main blades and 3 for the servo to swash links. After having a v.careful measure of the links they appear to be a max of 22mm between the links so the difference is not as big as first thought and having had a look at the links on the MS bling at the top of the Hornet index page they look the same as mine. So if you think that they are close enough I will give them a go! Its not like I will be doing any rad 3D anyhow!!

Cheers,

Rich

You should have an even shorter link than that. In your pic, the links look like the regular one and not the short one. Are you using the bell hiller head? The standard non bell hiller head uses the long links and the bell-hiller head uses the short one. You might be able to use the lenght you have now but you may have to adjust the other link to get the pitch correct.
