Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > First Flight Caliber 30

Had the first two flights of my Caliber 30 late this afternoon. It was getting dark so I did not let it get to far away. With the engine really rich and only getting about 1600 head speed I was supprised at the stability of the heli. I did notice some ossilation movement in the fuse when flying at a nominal speed. Question What head speed have most of you settled on after you have the engine broken in?

On both of my caliber 30's the fly bar was atleast a third of an inch out of center. Check this as well as the weight of the flybars. My first caliber was a third of an inch off center and the paddles were almosta half of a gram differance in weight. That will shake things up a bit.
Other than having to go back through and re-check all the critical adjustments/balance I have had great luck with both of them.

I did find my flybar off center by almost 1/8" before I flew it the first time. I made the correction and the first flight were very smooth. I think you are correct about the blade grip tightness. I had flights 3 thru 5 today and the first two had the wobbles bad when the head bogged down to 1500 or so but I did have fairly tight grips. I loosened the grips but also leaned out the OS 32 to 1 3/4+ turns. I still have over 1/4 turn to get it where most of the OS 32 on mufflers run. The head speed came up to the 1800+ range and the heli was much happier. The OS is still way rich and not making much power but I'm so used to a Rappy 50 and a Fury 60 (with a killer OS 61 on a MP) that I need to lower my expectation. So far so good

The 10th flight

Well I got my 10th flight in today and now I'm worried. I now have the engine making good power andits pulling 9 deg each way but the wobbling is getting worse. Any time the head goes below 1800 the fuse starts to wobble when in forward flight. I need to do a complete bench test and check out everything but this is different than any other heli I have ever seen. The Freya's do this when auto'ing when the head gets down to about 1200 or so but never when in flight. Otherwise the heli is rock solid and smooth (when the head is up above 1800). Anyone else seen this with there Caliber 30.

I set up a firends Caliber 30 last week, and had no problems. The model was very smooth, no oscillations - at that was with various head speeds tach'd between 1400 and 1700.

The only issue was that it was so powerful on the cyclics, needing some dual rates and expo to make it a little more docile

This was with the standard 32sx and wooden kit blades. And for interest it was pulling 9.5/10 degrees top end pitch at 1600rpm.

Regards,
Kev

P.S. Just to add, it used the eCCPM - and no interaction was visible or feelable

The Wobbles

My Caliber has a case of the wobbles as well. I've gone through eliminating slop in the radio tray and in the swash. I've changed to carbon blades also with only a small reduction in the wobble.

An increase in head speed helps slightly but I am @ 1850 right now and it still wobbles. At 1700 it wobbles worse.

The wobble mainly occurs after a hard (or not so hard) elevator input. It will oscillate two or three times before coming back to a normal hover. Doesn't seem to be a problem with right/left cyclic inputs. In FFF, I get the wobble mainly flying into the wind where it gets a little "pitchy" and it wobbles. The paddles are level. I'm going to try and change to a different paddle and see if that may be cause. My Caliber has had this wobble since day one so if the head dampers are too soft, that's the way they came. It has never been crashed.

Here is some pertinent information:
Mavrikk Carbon 550 blades
Stock paddles
9202 servos, CCPM
CG is right on the mainshaft

I built a frame brace to take the slop out of the radio tray and I made a chage to the swash to remove some slop there. These are both outlined on my personal web page. Just click the Caliber 30 button if you're interested.

Any input on this condition would be greatly appreciated. I like the Caliber 30 very much and this is but a small annoyance to an otherwise great flying heli.

Thanks in advance,

Mine also has wobbled since day one. I also have installed the servo braces as you showed and but have not done the swashplate yet. One thing I am going to try is to put a 1/4" long clear rubber tube on the spindle (the same as the Fury has) to center the pivot of the spindle in the head. This will stiffen the head and create a true(er) pivot point like the metal one in the Raptor. One thing I found was one of my blade grips has a bad moulding and is much stiffer twisting than the other grip. I spent 2 hours rebuilding it several different ways exchanging the bearings between the grips and rotating on the spindle and found it to be the grip. I called the Kyosho Heli Hot Line and they are sending me a new one no charge. The poeple at the hot line are really great in helping when they can.

Good idea on the clear tube to create a pivot point. I remember doing that in a XCell CT I had. Maybe using just the dampers for support affords a little too much dampening??

I'm heading out to the workshop to do it right now....

Thanks,

I just came out of my shop and spent some time stressing areas of the heli. The tail can bend up and down quite easily. ??? I may be adding a 3rd boom support from the horiz fin mount to the center of the skid strut. I'm dumping the WAY TO NARROW landing struts and installing Rappy struts. The area supporting the main shaft will also flex more than I like. This I will deal with later.

Just came out of my shop again. I installed a single modified Rappy boom support from the horiz tail mount center bolt to a hold I drilled in the center of the landing strut between the frames. This has stiffened the rear end a lot. I won't get to fly it until later this week.
