Tried the new gearbox on my 90 at the weekend

Wow, superb. Could handle all I could throw at it including some very heavy pirouetting metrenomes turning into something more like pirouetting rainbows . Also switching direction backwards to forwards in fast hurricanes was handled no problem at all, and lots more besides. This is the most I have thrown at this heli and it came back wanting more

I'm glad you're liking it. The design was aimed at removing any shortcomings in the previous design since 3D flying has taken a quantum leap since the original one was designed. Hopefully it will put up with the stuff that people come up with to destroy helis in the future.

What I'm likeing more than anything with this gearbox is how solid it feels when you piro while moving real fast. It just happily piros like you're standing still. Very sim-like. I've been working on smoothing out a fast inverted-backwards loop with a piro at the top (IB Yawvalanche ) . With the old gearbox, the piro would hang up if you were moving too quickly across the top (very unnerving). Now the heli goes through it real clean and precise with a very consitant piro rate. Same for piro-loops, piro funnels, and piro-flips. It really helps the confidence.

Incidentally, it even puts up with some heavy turf abuse. I dragged the tail in a stretched auto the other day which broke both tailblades. The output shaft, hub, and all gears survived as if nothing happenned.

I guess all the design goals were met.

The gears in the older gearbox were found to be borderline strong enough to handle the hardcore constant piroetting stuff that happens so often nowadays. The other shortcomming was that there was not quite enough pitch range to have the tail feel really solid through piroettes in FFF. If you would bog the motor during a piro-loop, the tail would let go. The new gearbox fixed both of these problems and gave the headroom needed for the hardcore stuff.

The older gearbox will still work fine for most of the 3D stuff, but things need to be near perfect if you get into piroetting flight. I flew the old gearbox at the XFC 2005 and it did alright, but I spent some time wondering when I was going to take the gears out again.

Chris will have to give you the price on the new gearbox.

To convert a machine that already has the aluminum blade grips and TT drive, it's $250.

This gets you the gearbox, tail rotor hub, pitch slider, and a new set of special tail ball links.

You will need to do a simple modification to the pitch bellcrank, and slightly adjust the length of your tail pushrod.
