JR Heli Vibe - Airskipper - Sylphide - Venture > Vigor CS Gear Problem - JR's Answer

As stated in an earlier post on this forum, the Vigor CS tail bevel gear have given me big troubles from day one. B]As we don't have a JR distributor in Norway,I decided to fax JR Japan directly, here's my fax to them:[/B]
I am having big trouble with the tail bevel gear on my Vigor CS. It has now stripped 3 gears. I am adjusting the gear mesh as it says in the manual : one piece of paper between the tail bevel gear and the tail drive pinion. After it is adjusted the gear runs smoothly with little backlash.I then go flying and the gear lasts about three minutes before it is stripped for teeth. This has happened three times now,in mid-air but I have managed to save the heli every time.I have also tried to replace the pinion gear, but that did not help. It is beginning to be very tiresome and expensive to change gears every 3 minutes. The heli is just 3 weeks old.
Am I doing something wrong here? Hope You will look into this, and give me Your opinion on this matter as soon as possible.
Thank You in advance.
Best regards

Here is JR's answer:

Dear Sir
Thank You for bringing this matter to our attention.
However we can not understand your detailed situation.
First of all, please contact with your supplier or a service center of the distributor you bought your Vigor CS.
If you have any questions, please contact us again.Thank You.
With best regards

Not too impressive if You ask me,maybe this is Japanese customer service????

machined bevel gear hub

One of the guys i fly with was also having this problem. He found that it was the tail input pinion that was not the problem. It was the bevel gear and the bevel gear hub. he found that if you push down on the bevel gear itself it does not take very much force at all to push down. This is because the hub that the bevel gear sits on doesn't support the gear all the way out to the edge of the gear. Since we do not use helical gears here we get enough force from the pinion gear in downward vector in essence pushing that gear down and screwing up the gear mesh. In order to fix this one of our local fliers machined a new bevel gear hub that supports the gear fully across the bottom face of the gear. Now when he pushes on the gear he cannot deflect it any. He can now treat the tail as hard as he wants and he hasn't striped the gear out again.

okay i'll try to take a picture of it tonight

That is if i can get together with that guy. I haven't seen him out at the field in the last month. Basically instead of just supporting the inner portion of the bevel gear like it does in stock form it actually extends to the outside edge of the bevel gear.

I saw this on CY's site http://www.curtisyoungblood.com/12%...nst%20angle.JPG
Look closely at the crown gear. There is more support on the crown gear. Is this the mod that Norvin is talking about?

that exactly the mod that was made.

sorry i never got the picture but that is the mod that we had to make in order to stop stripping gears.

Thank's for all the input. The picture on Curti's site looks very interesting and may well be the solution to the problem.Thankfully i know a guy with machining capabilities
BUT, why is it that only some Vigor CS owners have this problem??
It can't be the gear itself that's to weak, has to be something else, maybe a bad batch of gears?? So far my 3 replacement gears have been ordered from the U.S My fourth gear arrived yesterday, ordered from CyberHeli. It was packaged a little different, and the package said Superio, but it's without doubt the same gear.I have installed it and it runs pretty smooth, with no backlash.Hopefully the weather will allow some test flying tomorrow.Just praying that it*s going to last more than three minutes.

Ok guys,here it comes!
Been out hovering the Vigor today, with the new gear.So far, after 3 tanks of hovering things look good.A little bit of white "dust"around the gear, but that may be normal. It's running very smooth now,i have cleaned and checked it over, shows no sign of wear. Will try some more tomorrow and see if the white "dust" comes back.If not,i will definately try some flying.
