For those that cannot spend as much on upgrades as I do.... here's a mod that I copied off Walt's design. There's still twisting... but lesser than the stock 2mm carbon shaft... IT WILL NOT bend as easily when u need to put it into the Boom.... and best thing is that it fits the 3mm ID bearings easily.. and stays put with some bits of CA... easily removable with some debonder later(tested). Taking cue from DEetee's notes.... it is much easier to have metal tips/ends which allow you to fasten gears on with only a spot of CA and release easliy for change with debonder.......

1.5 inch Metal tips were chopped off from some old metal (alu-titan) tail torque shaft... the carbon tubes are 3mm OD 2mm ID....U only need to sand 3/4 of an inch of each metal tip with some sandpaper, then CA them on....

Indoor FLight Tests show up a lot less mini vibes.... and my tail is holding very tight... at 16% which previously required a gain of 34%...

WEight wise... It didn't change the CG even when I went from 2 (total) bearings + alu/titan tail shaft to 5 bearings (total ) on the new torque tube....

Walt's a genius......

Dun thank me...... Just give it a shot!! It was much easier than I expected.... remember to use more than 1 inch long of steel insert... and check the length sticking out by dry-fitting first before u apply the CA... You gotta be quick.. besides this being a quick mod....

Where do you get the center bearing from? My old Walts tail tube is goin out. After my last crash the tail has lots of vids at high RPMs.
Now im thinking about putting a bigger tail shaft

Sorry I can't help you on that.... It was from one of the Local stores own my my friend's family... Good bearings at special rate.... too bad they dun do internet sales for hobby at the moment... They are the regular 3mm ID 6mm OD type, sealed type... dimensions. 3mmx6mmx2.5mm

You can get 3x6x3 These should be available... I did order 2mmID flanged ones that were 3mm thick before I decided to do this mod.

Issue: Hornet X 3D - Correction about references to 3mm tail gears E617 & E618.

In the spring (2005) MS emailed us drafts of the instruction manuals to review and edit. Along with these manuals were the first drafts for the exploded view drawings which had incorrect part numbers and proposed part numbers that never became realized. During development of the Hornet X 3D there were discussions about changing from a 2mm tail drive shaft to a 3mm carbon tail drive shaft and the compromise in the end was to change to a 2mm steel tail drive shaft with the knurling on the front end to better engage the E118 Conical Pinion gear that mates to the main gear. Both E617 & E618 were included on these preliminary manuals.

I really wished they had decided to go with 3mm.. then all we need to buy are 3mm hollow tubes...

A reminder to those with Walt's tail drives that they are guaranteed for life against defect or crash damage. But you have to send it back in exchange for a new one. So don't go cannibalizing your Walt's tail drive before consciously deciding to waive the guarantee.

Oh no man. haha I just used your idea to keep my down time to a minimum. I took me no longer than 15 mins to do.

Would you rather have a week of no flying time just to get a part replace or fix it yourself in 15 minute and be flying agian? haha

well, back to topic, I really wished MS would consider working to bring better stuff to the hornet line again... things like the belt drive they initially abandoned, or a hollow/or 3mm torque tube.... Of course, as the old saying goes, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it',
