Audacity Models Pantera 50 - Tiger 50 > Dial indicator

I'm going to order a Tiger 50 tomorrow from Audacity and just finished reading through the manual posted on their site. I know what a dial indicator looks like, but have never used one. Can someone recommend a suitable indicator and a place to purchase one from?
Thanks

There's a ton on ebay. Or, if there's a precision bearing place in your home town they sometimes sell them as well, or a good quality auto shop.

I don't own one, but have access to one. When I did price them out they weren't very much money. Maybe $30 or $40 US for a half decent one. I imagine for what we use them for maybe a scale of 1/1000 is going to be sufficient, you'll probably use a larger scale I imagine.

It is recommended to dial everything but I didn't and don't have any problems. There are also different methods to balancing your fan that I've seen.

Can't recommend any brand names but I'm sure someone will pipe up soon enough now that the ice is broken so to speak.

Hope someone with more experience can help you out. Look in some of the other sections of RR. I'm sure there's a ton of information out there on this subject.

Good luck, and you'll love your Tiger I'm sure.

Thanks guys. I'll take a look on eBay as well as Harbor Freight and see what I can come up with.

Here's one that I've been using. I wouldn't build the space shuttle with it, but it's fine for model use. $18.00

They also have a nice digital caliper. Makes setting up pushrods very simple....$18.00

Eraser,

I bought a dial indicator from Harbor Freight tools yesterday on sale for $6.99. It looks exactly like the one rob10000 shows. Except I had to buy the stand separately. So my total tab was about $15-$16. I tried it last night. I works just fine.

Gunner,

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and ordered the one rob10000 had listed. Hopefully it will arrive today.

Thanks for the info and link. I bought a Tiger last year and have been dragging my feet with completing it. I have all of the electronics but was a bit intimidated by the whole dial indicator thing. I just ordered mine as well.

Let me know how you make out with it. I am going to be using a OS Hyper 50 engine. What are you using?

Shackscs,
I have a 50 hyper also. Did you order the longer clutch hub from Audacity or from your LHS? You need either that or a prop-drive. I just received the long clutch hub yesterday and put it on. Even without doing anything other than drop it on, I'm within .001 runout. I can't tighten the crankshaft nut yet, though, because I'm waiting on a crankshaft locking tool. So I don't know if tightening the nut will cause it to go out of tolerance or not. Also, I ordered the special nut from Audacity that supposedly keeps that from happening.

I have not gotten the engine yet, but thanks for the heads up. I will probably get it from Audacity. I am going to order it today.

Do you have the model number for that "special nut"?

Shackscs,
It's easy to find on the website. The part number is: PDR0090. If you get the OS 50 Hyper, you're going to want the long clutch hub. That's part number AUD0537. Also, I've been advised to use a crankshaft locking tool to hold the engine crankshaft while I tighten the nut. If you use screwdriver or stick anything in the exhaust port to hold the piston, you'll void your warranty if you screw something up. I ordered the tool from Heliproz. I'm getting a pitch gauge and the tool delivered tomorrow so then I'll be able to complete the assembly and do the mechanical adjustment.
