I've already been flying a Blade CP for a short while and decided that the hobby was interesting enough to make a bigger investment in. Rolled down to the Hobby Shop in order to price some kits out, and ended up leaving with a Hirobo Sceadu EVO 50 ><. I must say, the Sceadu's pricetag had/has me a little nervous, but I've read some good things about it on here and figured there were sufficient plusses to justify the slightly heavier pricetag.

Now I am just debating whether or not to build it or to return it, haha. Assuming I decide to build it, I still need to figure out what I should buy next. I'm coming in without anything (radio, gyro, motor, etc), so I'd like to make it count in the beginning. This is not to say, however, that I have an unlimited supply of cash on hand... I'm a college student after all =P Any recommandations in this area would be much appreciated. My friend just asked me if you guys could also give specific opinions on the Futaba 7CHP (if applicable) & if you could perhaps explain if/why PCM is better than FM.

Hi

Congrats on your buy

About the electronic stuff you will need:

- Gyro (buy a 401 + 9254 for tail and be over with. Still best bang for the buck)

- Servos (depends on your budget. You can either use analog Futaba 9202's, digital 9252's or some hitec's 6965 (not sure thats it... its the ones with carbonite gears. It all depends on the cash flow. Sometimes we bet more on the collective servos and drop the specs on the throttle servo

- Batteries (nicads, Nimhs (over 2500 pls , or lipos. Once more it depends on cash flow).

About the engine:

OS Hyper 50. In the exhaust area you can go hatori (lots of power and some noise), Zimmerman (not as noisy) or Funtech (real quiet for FAI).

About the Radio:

Once someone told me to get the best radio I could buy and the most inexpensive bird I could find. If you are serious about this hobby it will pay off in the long run. Radios don't dig themselves into the ground .

The 7CHP is a good radio but if you can afford it buy the 9CHP

FM/PCM... Uhh I'm going to get bashed here but here it goes anyways:

If you get an interference the FM system will go crazy. The PCM system will go quiet... depending on duration you either crash or recover from both. For more technical details about the technology there are alot of threads here.

You have bought the best 50 hand down! You are going to love it. Just be sure to get some help getting it set up correctly.
My set up...7CHP with S9252's on cyclic and pitch, S3151 throttle(came W/7CHP)Waiting on GY611 gyro(removed GY401/9254 and install gyro only into Trex),Mavrikk CF 600mm blades and powered by OS50 Hyper.

Heavier pricetag that what, you get what you pay for.If your worried about repair part prices,dont believe the raptor clan,the prices for the evo parts are as cheap as all the other 50's. You will love the way the EVO flys,i have flown almost all the other 50's and it is the best flying by far. DOUG

Congrats on purchasing a great heli. I am currently running two. Here's a great set-up IMHO that you can put together on a budget and still have excellent performance.

If you're not afraid to purchase some used goods, I would suggest shopping right here on RR.

Look for used/mint condition parts

Gyro/Servo Combo GY401/9254 @$150
(4) servos JR DS811 @$25 each (cheap and work great on a 50)
1400-1600mah Rx battery (I get about 3-4 flights between charges) $15
JR R700 RX (I never had an problems with FM receivers) $45
If you prefer a PCM Rx you can pick up a JR R770 or R649 $65-$100
OS50 hyper (I just bought one NIB here on RR for $170)
Revolution 50 muffler $25-30
JR 8103 TX $150-200

Other little things you will need
Remote Glow adapter $10
Header tank $15
JR heavy duty switch $10



You can get everything needed to outfit this heli for under $700. The only other things you need are starting equipment. (Starter, glow lighter, fuel can setup)

I live south of you although I work at PDX. So if you need any help let me know.

As for your Radio considerations I agree with most of what others have already posted, get the most radio you can afford. Buy what most people use in your area, which is Futaba. I also would lean towards PCM it has saved my heli on an occasion or two. As for Servos for the Evo if you go with digitals. I suggest 9252's on the cyclic and a 9151 on the collective. For standard coreless servos, I would not use 9202s! The reason is that unless you’re running a 6 volt pack they are SLOW! I would use 9001s over a 9202s on a standard 4.8 volt airborne system. As for the gyro, you can't go wrong with a 401/9254 combo. I also agree that you should just buy a Hatori muffler. Specifically, the #544. No mounting considerations, smooth quiet and consistent. Just bolt it up and go. I'm not sure if the "local" shop you probably bought your Heli from has them.
As for your battery, you can make a decent higher capacity Ni-cad for about $20. Why Nicads you ask, simpler and less $$ for an individual coming into the hobby, and they are more tolerant than other types of cells.

9202 They arn't THAT slow... I managed a 1 sec roll rate with them

The 9252 give you another feel of precision thats true. I love mine (I have them on all my helis).

I agree there is nothing wrong with the 9202 and I too once had them on all my helis. Although for a person new to the hobby 9001 to the tune of $30 a pop compared to a 9202 at $54 a pop might be an issue. If the newby has a deep wallet and they plan on going gusto, why go with anything less than digital.

Hmm... So how bad would it be to go with S3151s all the way around, minus the tail of cours, to start(those being the ones that come with a 7CHP). Is it worth going for the S9252s right away? Or would a begginer be able to still have enough fun with the weaker ones for a while? Keep in mind I'm 19 and trying to pay for college.

By the way, I'm "the newbie"s friend. ;D I'll get MY evo .50 soon!

3151s would be fine for learning. Many of us learned to fly with 148s in Concepts and had no issues.

That depends on the definition of 3D.

They will be enough for stall turns, loops, piros,etc... but I consider that acrobatics and not 3D like tic tocs, piroflips, chaos, etc

You will know when the time comes to change the servos

Ah, nice replies.

So, I think I am going to go ahead and built it, but I have no guts for it. I still need the engine, radio, and gyro. I can't decide what to get next, but whatever it is, it will be the last thing I can buy for a week or two. What's better to have while assembling: engine or servos? Does it matter?

GET THE SERVO'S,YOU CAN PUT IT ALL TOGETHER AND SET UP YOUR PITCH AND THROTTLE CURVES. It takes the longest to do all the linkages and set up. DOUG

Radio: 7CHP PCM

Gyro: Nothing yet; planning on GY401 w/ 9254.

Muffler: Nothing yet.


It's technically going to be flyable very soon, I'm rather excited. I was thinking about going with the 6EXH, but I decided in the end I'd be happier with the 7. I'm sure the 9C is all that and a bag of potato chips, but it's out of the question for me.

The gyro/servo is going the be, by far, the hardest thing to swallow I think. LHS wants ~230 for both. I suppose in the end it'll be worth it.

Hmm...not sure about this. The hyper has a better carb and head on it. What's wrong with it?
