Safety - RC Helis are not toys > almost kill, lucky still alive-safety is number one.

Lucky, I am still alive.

What happened ? Yesterday afternoon, At Houston Scobee field only had few people. Two heli pilots (me and a guy) and a couple of plankers. The heli guy flew around 20 minutes. I was watching him fly. He is very good but he was flying outside non-flying area including over the cover. I did not say anything that is my mistake.

After he had finished his 20 minutes, then, I was learning hovering at noise in. But he did not wait for me to finish, he flew again. I thought he will not fly over my head- Wrong Assumption. Excuse my language. Dam.., he did. He lost controlled his tail and someone screamed at me and I ran. The dam thing crashed just about 10 feet beside me.

The guy said he was real sorry. I had nothing to say but pray and thank God. I am still here.
Guy, please keep this sport safe and fun. Speak out against anyone flying dangerously even he is your friends. Dangerous flying heli just like drinking and drive. You may hurt someone or yourself.

Fly safe and have fun.

After the incident, I couldn't sleep. What will happen to my kids and family emotionly and financially if I were killed ?

Here is my suggestion for all of you.

1. Make sure you have enough life insurance for your family.
2. Make sure you have disability insurance if you are still alive but disable.
3. Make sure you have will too.

Family first and safety is number one.

Thank Willie. But the club rule is very lax and mostly depend on self-regulate. That why, if you see anything flying dangerously, speak out. Hurt feeling is better than hurting anyone.

Phillip, there must be rules in any type of hobby like this, spotters, flying zones, and non flying zones, # of planes that can fly at one time, etc. If they are not safety concious, there will definetly be instances like this, be careful, and kindly speak to that individual, of reckless flying. Planes can be just as dangerous too. Daz...

Good advise on taking care of your family. But remember guys this is a hobby that anything can go wrong and not be the pilots fault. If your flying field is VERY small then by all means restrict flights to one pilot at a time but if not ........keep your eyes and ears open. Go to an orginized funfly event and see the air full of heli's and you'll see it can be done safely.

Glad your safe and unhurt, Philip

We all ways speek out. There is always one dum (S) #@# (T) in the bunch. Do not let them kill anyone. If they want to kill them self's let them.

I have a hard time flying if there is alot of people around, because I do NOT want to hurt no one.

Heli's are fun but can kill.

Did you light the carnage on fire or simply stomp the remaining peices of his wrecked chopper to even finer peices. Be sure to note what channel Einsteinis running?

Dazzler's Right

I agree with dazzler, a club with lax rules about safety is just asking for a major injury. That goes for plankers too!

If someone is flying like that, as suggested go over and have a friendly word, if they keep doing it I would leave the area for your own safety, warn others to do the same (a few extra flights are not worth being on the receiving end of any model, plank or heli) and report the incident to whoever is in charge/responsible for safety.

Some people are too ignorant to take good advice and fly safely so just leave them to injure themselves and crash their machine.

My club has well laid out safety rules and a safety officer to over see them but all it ever takes is to stroll over and have a chat. I've been asked to keep a better eye on where people are after nearly flying over another pilot, I welcomed the advice and it has never happened again.

I'm glad your OK.

Fly safe,

Andy.

The Scobee field is inside George Bush Park, is a very nice and large field with beautiful surrounding and facility. Planker and Heli guys don't have any problem with each other and always get along as far as I know. Planker and Heli fly at different location inside the field. There is no conflict or flight for flying space.

I had talked to one of the guy in charge of the field. He said he did talk the heli guy not to fly close to non-flying zone or pit area before he crashed his heli. He saw the whole incident and glad to talk to me this afternoon at a local hobby shop. Sometime, people just don't listen, just like don't drink and drive.

This incident makes me rethink what is life priority. Thank you all you guys posting. Fly safe and have fun.

Just another thought.

If a pilot was killed by a crashed Heli or plane from another pilot, what kind of benefit can AMA offer? Anyone have any ideas.

Hi, Audimaxx,

The field is at Westside side of the town which is located inside Geroge Bush Park at Westheimer Parkway. It is an excellent field.

Hi Dazzler,

Thank you for your posting. I am , at least, glad to see the reponse from Heli community regarding safety concern.

The flying field sure have rules and post it at the bulletin board but who is going to read it. That is the problems. But the main problem is how to enforce flying rules especially some idots have no respect to human life at all. This is one of the best public field in Houston area.

I have learned my lesson deep in my heart. Appreciated all guys contribute to this post.

Philip

Hi Dazzler,

Thank you.

The coverage is not enough at all. But just around fifty dollars for AMA coverage is a great bargain. Probably, you guys need to re-direct some of your heli money for term-life insurance. Hope AMA can also negoiate some annual term-life insurance option for $500,000 coverage for another fifty bucks.
