Scarry thing happened to me yeaterday at my flying site. I was all alone, so I fired up my heli, proceeded to do a little hovering, all of a sudden, the throttle had no responce! I couldn't control it at all. Then I noticed the muffler started to shake. By this time i was looking for a nice soft place to ditch the thing. I had a full tank fo fuel and being a "beginner" couldn't begin to think of any "emergency" steps to take. All I could do was hold on to the sticks and pray. For some odd reason, it came down slowley to the ground and started piroletting a couple times!. Scared the S--t out of me!. By this time, it was shaking violently. The muffler was coming off! I started walking backwards because I knew something was going to happen....maybe throw a blade. I tryed to keep my cool and think but that was really hard. I tryed to keep it pointed into the wind as best I could but the tail kept whipping back and forth. I kept this up for about 15 minutes.....Finally, it ran out of fuel! Big relief. As I approached the thing, I could see what started the whole thing. On the end of the throttle rod was a plastic connector that got too close to the muffler and the heat from it melted the part where the rod threaded into it. Once that was melted....the throtle rod fell down and there was no way to control the throttle. Now that I think about it and my knees have stopped shaking, couldn't I have used the throtle hold switch to control the pitch, so I could have applied neg pitch to help hold it on the ground? One thing I have learned from this.....Don't use plastic parts on the throttle rod! Now I can go clean out my pants and shorts!

Instead of metal couplings I would suggest you move the throttle arm so it won't happen again. If you use a metal coupling you run the risk of generating RF noise and that can give you an even wilder day.

Glad you got it down in one piece. Keep at it.

Dragon, I'll never forget that day! I think the reason it went so wild on me was the muffler comming loose. It was barely hanging on by one bolt. That probably generated RF noise to cause the tail to go wild. Would a metal rod with metal clevises connected to a plastic servo wheel and a plastic throttle meck. cause RF interfearence? In this Concept 30, there is not much room to move the linkage.

Ja1010, I'll look for that link. I just received my new Hawk Sport kit today so I will take your advise on the lock nuts for the muffler. I didn't know that much about helis when I biult the Concept 30. Mine is one of the first ones that came out. (Concept 30 DX) I put a few upgrades on it to convert it to a SX or was it SE? Can't remember which. Never did fly it much because I couldn't get anyone to help me with it. Noboby in my area was flying them and if there was someone, they were reluctant to help. Most of what I have learned has been by myself and by trial and error. Don't have a G2 so I can't practice anything. Now that I have found this forum, I feel like help is just a click away. The only thing left to do now is learn how to quit shaking when the heli gets airborne!

Signman,

Never mind, I thought you had a metal throttle arm. In your case a metal throttle rod and couplers will be fine.

Dragon, I thought that was what you thought I had. I couldn't see why what I had on it would cause interfearence. That's OK, I'll need all the suggestions I can get here. I welcome all replies!

ja1010, I bookmarked your link so I can read up when I get a chance, thanks. Your experience is much welcomed here! As you said, I did save that bird....I don't know how...I did all I could do with the setup I have.....You see, my radio is an old 5 channel Futaba with a throttle hold switch, idle up switch, and rev. up & down mixing. I haven't got it set up like most of you do. Low stick is 0 -1 pitch, mid stick is +6 hover, and full is about +9. That is what I learned to hover with. Do you suggest I set up my new Hawk this way or should I go with mid stick 0, 3/4 hover, full +10-12? I will use the Futaba 9CHF radio for setting it up. That is a much nicer radio than what I have now. I received my new Hawk IV yesterday. I ordered the Hawk Sport with the bearing upgrade but I guess the Hawk IV already has the bearing upgrade so that is what they sent me. I'll take it!!

Thanks for all your time to try to help me. I'm sure I will learn from your documents. I will give your setup a try on my new Hawk. I haven't bought the radio yet but it won't be too long from now.
