Updated 26 February 2006!!

I Finally took it up for some extended hover-work. It rained Saturday and was windy sunday, but I fought the wind to run a few tanks of fuel through my CH-47. It was hovering fairly stable despite 5 mph winds gusting to 12 mph.

My test flights showed I needed to increase the ATV settings for Pitch, roll, and yaw. The controls seemed real mushy and I had to add some Reverse-Expo to make it more sensitive. I also had to reduce the collective on the front disc to help it lift up evenly.
Copter Doctor took it up for a test flight and came to the similar conclution as I had. It would have plenty of control sometimes, then would have less control at other times. I'm going to ask Jeff Greene if he has any tips.

I'll post video tonight!

1st Video
2nd Test Flight!! 7-10 MPH Winds!!!

I flew for a while then Copter_Doctor had a chance to see how my CH-47 flew. Hopefully I'll get a less windy day soon!

I've been waiting for the winter winds to calm down. Seems every weekend up this way has been unusually windy. I'm in no rush so sooner or later I'll be up there with you. I'm looking foreword to the video!

Yup... Wind is no friend to these tandems. Looks stable though considering. It should be much better when you take it out on a calm day.

Good to see another one in the air!

Sunday March 5th

My controls felt Mushy and the control responces were not as they should be. I talked to Jeff Green at Hirobo Here is what he told me

"Yes lowering the gyro sensitivity for the controls as well as overdriving the ATV's is the right method to quickly increase response.
I know my Rudder ATV is near max, 140 I believe. My roll and elevator are fine but the gains were reduced. You can also increase the output for those channels in the mixer, but I would try it in the radio first.
Also try increasing the head speed to 1500 or so. This will make the controls crisper in FFF. A governor helps it fly better as well.
I raised the RPMs and reduced the Elevator Gyro sensativity and it did help. I got it up in a nice stable hover for an entire tank of fuel. It still takes some strange cyclic compensation when you change the collective, but I'm getting closer.

more later...

steve and i messed around with his 47 again on sunday and it is flying much better than the last time out. the fore/aft still seems a bit funny, one minute you are pushing the stick forward and the next, you're pulling it back. still a bit more tweaking to do but it felt comfy enough that we both took it round a close circuit a few times. i finally got to see if i could taxi one of those things and it is easy to do. it wants to go but taxiing on the two rear wheels took a bit more work and though i got it to do it, it wasnt smooth. steve is just gonna have to allow me to practice that some more heh heh. steering while all wheels are on the ground though was a little tough. maybe steve will get the steering working on the right rear as on the fullsize.

I've got a few other things to fix before I add steering!!

I'm going to order that starter! To start my Hirobo chinook with my standard Hobico starter, we had to crack the glow plug. I'm going to get a dynatron to see if that fixes my problems.

I have a Chinook on order from Singapore hobby supplies, I should be with me around the first week of April, can you give me an opinion on the servos you use, I was thinking 8311's or something similar I like to fly JR, but maybe thay are too much, plus the cost is 100 US each thats 600 bucks just for servos!

The servos you are running on your Chinook are Futaba 9252's right? do you think they are good enough or with hindsight would you change them.

rotorpsyco,

Thanks for posting those pics! That will help me out when I get to detailing.

I think you could use less expensive servos. The control movements are not fast enough to require such a high end servo.

I haven't had much time to work on the Chinook, I graduated Army Flight school on 23 March 2006 and had the family here. I think I have many of the kinks worked out and can start putting it in the body.

Here are some pictures flying around w/o body. It is doing better, but I had to get a better starter before I could put it in the body.
