This issue happened to my Maxi Joker 2 cameraship. Might be old news to some. The tail drive pinion top had fallen off out of nowhere. Luckily I was just hovering low to the ground. The belt fell off and the tail stopped!!!!!!! I saw the pmetal piece hit the ground a minute before it happened. I got it on the ground with minimal damage. If this would have happened up high you would be reading about me in the paper. I know it was installed right because I checked it religiously. Plus the pinion and roller were still in place. I made sure the roller had no part in this. It was still in place perfectly lined up with the pinion not interfering. If this cap comes off. You will crash. Its that simple. Might want to check those pinion caps. (gallery picture)

Since this happened out of nowhere when it appeared fine. Im scared it will happen again. Its easy to see how it happens if you look at the piece. It might be a good safety measure to extend a small piece of aluminum over the top of the gear. It very well would save you if the top pops off like mine. Theres a pic of the problem in my gallery.

no, you're not understanding.

The upper 'flange' on the pulley came off the pulley.

That allowed the belt to move up (and off the pulley).

Part failures do happen but how sure are you that the
belt was running in the pulley the way it should and not
applying a force to the edge of the flange? Or belt tension
was too loose?

Especially in the cold Ohio winter? Perhaps the belt loosened
and slapped the flange enough?

I know the obvious thing would be to look at human error. The belt was riding nice and taught. I had several flights on it. Plus I check it before every flight. My roller was in the pinion groove but not contacting anything. Even if the belt was to tight or loose(wich it wasnt) it shouldnt have happened. I believe a part that critical should be able to withstand that. The only thing I can think of that I would have done is the installation. Maybe I loosened or banged the top when trying to install it?

no problem.

I know here in the Northeast, almost no matter how tight I make
the belt, when I fly in the cold, it loosens up.

I *reallly* wish the d@mn boom & attach block had a groove/pin
to keep the tailshaft horizontal.

Have you spoken with Joe yet? Part #357 is a preassembled part. How is this part held together?

Sorry to hear about your bird. Congrats on the minimal damage though. Good luck in getting it back up quickly.

Who is Joe? I usually get my parts from fx aeromodels. They dont seem to know the first thing about helicopters. But they have been tremendous as far as customer service.

I had a similar failure but mine did not shear completely off, the flange seperated and was spinning freely only held on by the center portion.

Something to keep an eye on!

Joe is the US distributor for the joker. jokerusa.com. I wasn't aware that this heli could be bought anywhere else in the US. He is a pleasure to do business with.

I know on my machine, the belt rides near the bottom of the
pulley and I can see 1-2mm of aluminum pulley between the
top of the belt and the flange in question.

I check both of my Maxi's tonight. When the pulley turns the belts drive down on the pulleys. Makes sense with the twist direction of the belt. The flange at the top of my new Maxi (never in the air yet) has a small warp in the flange though.

For what it's worth, mine rides against the bottom of the pulley also (Joker 2).

Oddly my new gear runs at the bottom also. I probably had a defective part and overlooked it. Does anyone run a 14t front and 14t rear pinion for the tail? I believe they should both be 16t but I cant find any in stock.

Here is an assist with the part in question.

I have not had any problems with the four or five that we are flying.

I order from both Fx & Joker-USA (Joe Howard) Both are great to deal with. Joe is by far and above one of the best sources of info concerning the Minicopter helicopters and Jokers in general. (Now if we could just get him to update his website, with better pricing and parts avail.) he would rule the world!
