Here's the problem..

I've got a Nexus 30 that I just finished. I managed to hover today but not without some problems. The tail seems overly sensetive. I've checked the trims and revo mixing on my tx and even set the gain on my gyro up all the way to stiffen up the tail but alas..its all over the place. I under stand that some rudder input it required to offset torque and that revo mixing is there to help but I'm not sure what to do now. What are some recommended settings to start with for up and down throttle as far as mixing goes? Is there any other way short of buying another gyro to dial down the sensetivity and make the tail sit still?

Gyro I'm using is a HeliMax Piezo gyro.

Have you tried reducing the gain on the gyro? If it's set too high the tail will dance from side to side.

twitchy nexus

I'll take a stab at your problem:

Is the problem just with the tail? If so is the servo moving in the proper direction? For a Nexus right stick the pushrod should move aft. Left stick moves it forward. Is the guro set for the proper rotation? To check this lift the tail and move the tail quickly to the left. The rudder servo should correct this by giving left rudder to correct.

Does the problem happen as you throttle up or in the air after you are in hover? Which way is the tail going and which correction are you giving?

If your gyro has HH on then you should not need revo mixing. If you have a non-HH gyro then start with revo mixing with 30% revo-up and 20% revo-dn.

Did you add some right rudder as you advanced the throttle? I know I have to do this on my Nexus. This allows the tail response to catch up as the throttle is advanced.

Is you gyro new? Has it been in a crash? If new and undamaged it should be OK. Initially you start it at 100% (the least sensitive and most steady) then adjust it down to a setting you like and give the response you want (usually between 50-60%) When you get to fwd flight then you can turn the sensitivity down to 50-40% to prevent hunting.

Check all your linkages and servo. A faster servo might help but on a Nexus standard servos are usually fine. Make sure there is no binding or excessive slop. Make sure the servo is moving the correct direction. Set your ATV on the rudder to 100% or more if you can. Also make sure your engine is set properly with no lagging in the throttle

That's all I can think of for now.

Ok..the manual for the gyro says that I should increase gain to make the tail resist movement and to decrease gain to increase movement for aerobatics and what not. Is there a problem with too much gain that the instructions aren't telling me?

I did that...

Mine did that too, I couldn't figure it out . I did pull my head out of my....hat and change the direction on the gyro. Just a flip of the switch and it works great now.

Gyro help

I had a Heli-max piezo gyro on a nexus, to set your gain, turn it up until the tail starts to wag, then back it off just enough to make it stop.
if tail control is too sensitive from the radio you may want to add some negative exponential on the rudder to make it a little less sensitive to stick movement (provided your radio is capable of EXPO)
if your gyro is set for the wrong direction it would cause it to spin constantly.
I run my radios without any revo mixing at all, if all you are doing is hovering and ff you wont really need it yet. your gyro will probably drift just a little regardless.
you may even want to try moving the linkage a little further out on the rudder servo to make it respond a little quicker if needed.
I had great results with that Gyro, stick with it and you will get it fixed. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help...

Ok I finally got it fixed. I flipped the gyro upside down and it corrected the problem initially. The tail still moved around a lot but I managed to kill the revo settings and it did the trick. The tail is now stable FINALLY. Thanks for the help everyone..

nexus tail movement clarification

Wanted to clarify an earlier post by jbrundt who said:

Is the problem just with the tail? If so is the servo moving in the proper direction? For a Nexus right stick the pushrod should move aft. Left stick moves it forward. Is the guro set for the proper rotation? To check this lift the tail and move the tail quickly to the left. The rudder servo should correct this by giving left rudder to correct.

I think the "aft" and "forward" directions were reversed?

On my nexus, right rudder input moves the rudder servo horn forward (towards the nose) and left rudder input moves the rudder servo horn backward (toward the tail)

Checking gyro function: By moving the tail quickly to the left (same as nose to right), the gyro should compensate by moving rudder servo horn backward (toward the tail) to give the "countering" left rudder.
