Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > Caliber 30 soon ready

Hi folks. Just wanted to tell someone about my "extra" caliber.

I suddenly decided to buy a small and hopefully good extra heli, and found out that the Caliber 30 seemed very interesting. I got one from CyberHeli just a few days later. I also got the Correct swashplate/ fan/ flybar control arms/ clutch + the "must-have" brake disc. He didn't have the mixer arms stock, but yesterday I found out that these arms are the same parts as the stock "60"-ones. (I have a spare 60 after a good crash earlier this year) Also, I found that the Aileron levers from the 60 fits the 30 (OK, they're ment for push-pull, but what the heck...I mounted them directly.) Finally, I also had a extra set of golden tail blade grips...

So what first seemed like a total plasic-fantastic suddenly started lookin quite good. I painted the canopy using Standox Metallic base in color "Mellow Purple" from Honda. This is the perfect match to the color of the Correct parts. I also painted the "Windshield", before applying the standard decals. I then topped it all with 2K clear. OK, the standard canopy may not be the finest ever, but I kinda like it... after all it sure doesn't look like anything else on the market..?

Engine will be the Webra 35 red head/ Weston minipipe... just to try something else than the OS 32. Anyone who has any experience with this combo?

I really look forward to the test flight...

Brgds

You will fricken love your caliber. I wouldn't trade mine for anything....Ok I wouldn't trade it from almost anything.

This is a picture of ther SF bay and the dog park that I frequently fly at. This picture was taken from my Caliber 30. I thought that you might get a kick out of it.

Thanks! Yes I got a kick out of that... only sad to know that winter is coming, and summer is seven cold, dark months away! Anyway, I will get a few flights on it before its too late...

Mavpro, Yea I know the winter in Norway is long and cold. I fell in love with a Norski aupair that was here for the summer a few years ago. I am sure if the rest of the norskies are half as pretty as she was you will have no problem staying warm through the winter. Some, if not the coolest most down to earth, bueatiful people I have ever met. Yi elsker norskies massa. Enjoy that new Caliber. Check to make sure the flybar is centered, and be sure to go back through and loctight everything.

Thanks for your kind words. I don't know about all the women out there (I'm married, and shouldn't really know either...?), but yes, winters are loooong here, and social activity is important...c",)

Maybe I know your norwegian girlfriend?...after all, Norway is a small country and only 4 mill. people...

Thanks for tips, I sure will check her out around the clock before test flight. Next I'm curious about that three bladed rotor head. Have anyone tested it yet?

Mavpro,

I have a Caliber 30 with the Webra 35 speedy. Excellent Combo. Break-in for the Webra is about one to two gallons (Coolpower 5%) at rich needle settings. Try the engine at two turns out on the high needle. The heli may barely be able to get off the ground at these rich settings. Through the first gallon try to keep it really rich. By the end of the second gallon you should be down around 7/8 to 3/4 out on the high needle and the engine will be screaming with power you cannot believe. I cannot run the Webra 35 at full throttle - it makes my headspeed easily climb over 2,000. I fly at full pitch which may be around +12 and at full throttle the Webra just wants to rip the head off my heli.

The Caliber is an incredibly stable and crisp heli. I also own a Nexus and a Fury Extreme and I can tell you the Caliber feels more like the Fury and certainly A LOT better than the Nexus.

I liked the Webra 35 so much that I bought another one for my Nexus - pulled out and chucked the OS 32. BTW, I also bought a Webra 91 for my new Robbe Cuatro.

I am going to attach a camcorder to my Cuatro and film the field (Bayside R/C, Fremont, CA) where I usually fly.

Thanks for good info. Seems that 15/15 fuel will be too much for this engine?. I only use fuel containing 15% nitro for my OS 61 and the YS 80 in the "big" calibers. Do I have to use less nitro on the Webra?

BTW. I just got in from my hobby shop. CCPM system is now about to become finished using three JR DS 8301's. Throttle will have a old but good JR 4051, and tail will have the Futaba GY 401/ 9253 combo. Only sad I still havent got the engine. Hopefully testflight/ break-in will take place within 14 days or so.

Mavpro,

Can you post a pic of your Caliber? I'd like to see how some people are painting the ugly beast.

Tks!

sharam,

What muffler and fuel are you using when it shows screaming power?

Mavpro,

I think 15% nitro may be too high - I have never tried it though. I would stick with 5%.

hansuha,

Fuel is Coolpower 5% nitro. Muffler is the stock muffler that comes with the Caliber 30 kit. Muffler is very quiet. The guys at the field cannot believe how quiet the engine is with the stock muffler.

ThrottleHold,

I have painted mine an orange color. It's a bit dark though which makes orientation a little difficult at times. I should have used the same bright yellow that I have on my Nexus and on My Fury Extreme.

Sharam......

Your saying the orange is to dark?!?!??! i had a cameleon canopy, i could see it the whole time. the only problem i had with it was it kept blending in with the sky, darn cameleons! I could keep really good oreintation with it. but thats just me. I dont know if i understood it wright but, did you say that 15 percent might be to much to break a engine in with? correct me if im wrong, but, doesnt it have more oil? oil is good for a new engine, isnt it?

I cant beleive you use 5% nitro! youll be amazed if you upgraded to 20!
Maybe thats why your engine is so quite! i dont know how you keep an eye on it. i mean, what if your engine dies, and your up high, it has no exhoust, and its quiter than a electric. that would suck because after a while, you notice its dropping altitude, so you give it more collective, then it starts to drop faster, so you give it more collective, then all of a sudden, you see your blades stop! ouch! i would feel safer with a nice loud engine with 30% nitro. Thats just a thought. So next time your flying and its dropping altitude, go negative!

Corey11,

Darker colors tend to blend quickly with the rest of the heli and can cause disorientation. I would have preferred the yellow I usually use.

Webra engines are mostly designed for the low nitro fuel - 0% to 10%. 15% nitro fuel has too high a nitro content for the Webra 35 Speedy Redhead. The 5% nitro that I use has about 18%- 20% synthetic oil. If you try to use high nitro fuel in the Webra 35, you will probably have pre-detonation which can cause problems. To use high nitro fuel in the Webra 35, you have to shim the head to lower the compression. I am quite happy with the low nitro fuel since it only costs half per gallon as the high nitro and I get tons of power out of it.

I don't really care much about the smoke. I can tell quickly from the the stick motion and the resulting heli motion whether my engine is lumbering or out or running fine.

BTW, I run YS 20/20 fuel in my YS 80 Fury Ex and it smokes like hell!!

Your advice is great. If it's dropping altitude, I will go negative!!

Corey,
You can get practically any nitro content fuel with the 18% - 20% oil content. Yes, you are correct. The oil content is very important for a new engine.

ya i was going to say, the engine needs all the oil it can get. i want to see your fury fly! are you using 30% in it?

Next time we are at the field, I wil pull the Fury out of the car. I am using YS20/20 fuel in it which means it has 20% nitro and 20% oil (synthetic) content. I may try some 30% Coolpower in it just to see what it will do. As it is, the YS 80 is really quite powerful with the 20% fuel.
