HIROBO Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > EVO 50 Main Belt Drive?

Has anyone ever considered converting a Sceadu 30/50 to a main belt drive system similar to a Kyosho Caliber 30? Seems like it would eliminate the noise problems and potentially reduce engine vibration, etc.

The Caliber setup seems very nice and I was wondering why this kind of drivetrain isn't more popular?

Problem with a belt, you will lose some power because of the inherent friction of a belt drive. Also a belt set-up gives a little "reflex" when torque is changed quickly; this could translate to a "slight" delay in power transfer.

Belts are a lot quieter; but as always with anything, there always have to be a compomise...

I feel gears are a lot nicer for mechanical set-up; they are a little noiser, but there are easy to maintain and have low rolling resistance. too bad they don't make helical gears for the Evo....

I THINK the sceadu is quieter with a torque tube. i also have full delrin gears so compared to a belt and blacks its VERY noticably different.

the belt drive makes a distinct sound but not louder than the plastic gears.. hell, you could even say it sounds like a belt spinning

Thanks for the interesting comments. Makes sense about the torque flex and power loss. My stock main gear is very noisy, I bought the Delrin replacement, hopefully it will quiet down.

What are people's opinions about a belt tail drive system versus a torque tube drive? Judging from the manufacturers, it seems like the quality scale goes up from wire to belt to tube?

There is a SD Shaft drive kit for the Sceadu. Part # 0412-182

....which I just noticed was in the thread posted above.

This is the only place I found it doing a quick search: http://www.ehirobo.com. Only $76.

Yep....you are right....guess it's time for me to have my eyes checked. Thanks for the correction.

Too bad though....at $76 I was considering it. But good thing too because I would have been surprised with my package when it arrived.

spritefiend,

Are there individual replacement parts for the set or do you have to buy the entire set at once if you break a tooth on the output gear or something minor?

You could by the parts for the TQ Tube upgrade seprately; although it is pretty expensive. The conical gears are around 30 bucks a piece, the drive tube is around 70. It is almost cheaper to by the whole upgrade for parts.....

I do enjoy the Tq Tube upgrade, it is overall a smoother heli, only issue is the gear noise is increased and it can get expensive after a crash...

BTW, I have a parts list for the TQ tube set-up at the bottom of my gallary...

yea.. if you screw any part of it up, you may as well go with a whole new one and save whatever you can for the next time.

luckily i havent crashed one but i stupidly bought the gears incase i do and the tube itself isnt damaged.

no worries, if that really were the price, id have gotten a couple on the spot, lol

I have crashed once where the gears were stripped, tube was ok ( I did have to true it though)

My last crash was total destruction.....

I did replace the entire set-up though. I really like the TQ drive....

I wouldn't say it was a quality issue, more like the way it happened in history but not necessarily in the order you mentioned.

The tail drive started out going from speedo cable, to wire, to OK belt, to a tube drive and back to a better belt.
