on my Falcon with an OS 50,,,
I have broken the bolt that go threw the main shaft (under the main gear), 2 times I have broken it, maybe the nut just came off, but I did use blue lock tight on it, the first time was on a hard landing,,, I was just wondering if anyone els had done this ?!!

try using a longer bolt with a partial solid shank. I used a 25-35mm (don't remember off-hand) one and cut it to the length i needed. It has worked great.

Bolt

Jim,

The nut will surely come off if you applied a threadlocking compound to it!!!!

NEVER APPLY THREADLOCK TO A LOCKNUT or to a control rod that goes into a plastic BALL LINK (found someone who had done this last weekend)!!!!

What makes the locknut LOCK is the nylon insert or a plastic ball link stay put is the friction of the plastic. Thread locking compound eats away nylon or plastic!!!

Also, DO NOT overtighten this nut. Use the locknut and just secure it so that it is snug against the hard steel auto sleeve.

Shouldered bolt

You don't just want a longer bolt, you want a shouldered bolt. The "long" part comes in because you want as much shouldered area (non-threaded) as possible, so you get a long one so it is almost all smooth and you dremel the end off.

These bolts shearing is a common occurence in the raptor forum (search for Jesus bolt).

WARNING!!!!

Gentlemen,
I STRONGLY advise that you do NOT use a shouldered bolt on the Falcon SE's autorotation hub.

Two reasons:
1) In a crash the fully threaded bolt will shear off and prevent the dreaded chicken dance.

2) The Falcon SE's mainshaft has a lock-ring BELOW the upper bearing block. So, should the autorotation hub bolt break the head will not depart the machine like the Raptor or Sceadu. All that will happen is you won't have power to the head.

I had my first taste of what would of happened had I put that fully shanked bolt in when building the Falcon SE V2. On my first crash with this heli I put it in inverted in IDLE UP 1 and the motor went wild. I ran over to the machine and yanked the fuel line. On inspection I found that the auto-rotation hub bolt sheared off preventing the head from dancing around on the ground. This saved me countless dollars in additional damage and made killing the motor ALOT easier.

I think there is a reason that Century provided a fully threaded bolt in the kit despite all the "Jesus" bolt failures on the Raptors floating around.

Lower Mainshaft bolt....

Howdy!!!
I don't know what would happen during an inverted failure, but I have had this bolt fail in upright flight, and all that happens is that you GET to auto down.. No big deal, aside from the engine going
"zing"... To be fair, I was doing some pretty harsh collective slams on the previous flights before the bolt failed... Still a great heli for the price..

Austin Fun Fly...

Howdy Payton!!! We are having our first fun fly here in Austin.. Info, maps, hotels, etc. are available at www.austinrc.org You have to look close to find the hyperlink that takes you to the flyer for the event, but it is there.. The fun fly is Oct. 11, 12, and 13.. We will be GIVING away (notice I did NOT say raffle) a Hirobo Freya and some other odds and ends.. If you can, come on Fri. 11 before 5:00pm, we will provide free fajitas to the registered pilots. On Sat. night we will have a steak dinner available for $10.00.
I know that Ron from Ricks is coming and I believe the fella from Absolute Helis may be there too.. Should be alot of fun... I would definately like to meet you and compare Falcons..
I ditched the horizontal stab on my Falcon today.. I got rid of all but a little chunk to hold on the boom support.. I did this to make backwards flight easier.. The side benefit was that removing the fin helped the tail heavy condition some...
If you would, please let all the Houston folks know about this event and bring as many people as you can.. We need a good turn out to insure that the plankers let us use the field again next year..
THANKS!!!!
