Bergen R/C Helicopters > Bergen Turbine Build

As promised, here is the online build for Dakine's Bergen Intrepid Turbine. This won't necessarily be a step by step, but I will try to hit the high points.

If any one has questions, wants clarifications, or just adding your thoughts, jump right in.

To start off with, The Turbine showed up today from Wren.

Nicely packaged and protected. I almost hate to pull it all out!

Beautiful machining throughout.

Here's the heart of the matter. This thing is balanced to run at 160,000 RPM at full throttle! You can also see the rear ceramic bearing.

The front end, again, beautiful machine work on the compressor.

Installing the intake and compressor. Also set the compressor to intake clearance at this point. Not difficult, just critical to get it right to prevent rubbing. When you've got it right, you can spin the nut by hand, and it continues spinning for a tremendously long time. That aluminum nut is a left hand thread, and contains the magnet for the RPM pickup.

The combustion chamber is another awesome piece of work. Handle carefully so as not to deform any of the fuel or propane tubes.

A peek inside the combustion chamber, and just like that, we're ready to close it up. I love that beautiful stainless outer case.

I install the Glow plug to help line up the front case holes. Some tight tolerances here, so leave 'em loose until there all installed.

Attach the fittings next, making sure everything is secure. It's tough to get to these later on!!

The anodized green FOD screen slides on next, after pulling the tubes and RPM sensor wire through the rubber grommet. The screen mesh is factory installed, Sleek looking!!

The Glow plug requires the element to be pulled out to ensure lighting off the propane for startup. Be careful not to break the element, then reinstall into the case.

I install an Intrepid 60 aluminum fan onto the gearbox, upside down to aid in cooling the gearbox. The fan hub then drives the clutch, shown later. The fan is dialed in to less than .002 runout.

The rear gearbox mount is also installed.

The forward mount is installed on the rear of the turbine, then the rear mount, fan hub, and forward mount are all indicated together, making sure they are level with each other. This is important to the alignment of the fan hub to clutch system.

All of this is done for you before we ship the kit to you.

All put together after dialing in the mounts. I'll remove the gearbox for inital bench run of the Turbine itself.

This thing looks good!!

great build. Are you going to continue with pics from the heli itself? Just for curiousity, how hard is it to get a turbine waiver here in ca, Dakine? Or do you just say, screw ama....

Rhett... I can't fly, luckily the HC Profi Can!

Rhett,

$hit, it's harder to find a flying field than to get a turbine waiver in CA!

The waiver allows you to fly at AMA fields with turbines allowed.

However, if I'm down at the beach buzzing across water getting videos, obviously I'm not under AMA's jurisdiction. Just have donuts handy fo da po...lice.

Hey Chris

On the turbine Intrepid Warren Allred was flying early last year at some airshows, he had an exhaust/air drive setup that eliminated the gearbox all together.

Are you going to be making this available too? It was a sweet setup.

I'd rather meet you at Denny's. Especially with all the beautiful women which whom relocated from Utah to work at the Denny's where we had lunch three months ago

I recall, Gary greeting a fellow customer at Denny's......."I'm sorry, did you say your name was Billy Bob or Billy Sue?"

Every once in awhile a few migrate that way, so what you are saying is that now the Denny's is the place? If so I'm in it's easy to find and the food isn't that bad.

Hey Old Red,

Unfortunately I have no knowledge of any of that so I don't know how I can make it available. This is the second time you've mentioned it, but no one here has seen it or know anything about it.

I just fired up the new Turbine of Tony's, after a minor tweak of one of the spraybars to clear the glow plug, it fired up and ran like a champ. For the initial bench runs, I let it idle for a tank or two, then jockey the throttle around a bit to check the stability and accel/decel delays. I keep it at or below 100,000 RPM's, and keep an eye on the EGT. At an idle it runs appx 320 C, but take it up a few notches and it gets DOWN to 280 C or so.

Now we reinstall the gearbox and start putting the lower frames together!!
