just woundering if anybody has any experience with this helicopter first hand, i am shure this is not the vario jetcopter, what ever hapened to the vario one did this air star jetcopter take over. where is the best place for spares for this heli. it has HP5 mechanics. any information would be great. there is also a link to the heli i am talking about. this heli has a head speed of 1450 rpm, can i do loops and rolls (light 3d) with this model and will v 810 be an acceptable blade to use.

jetcopter sx

also can someone explain to me what a free turbine means,my understanding is that sitting on the ground on idle the rotors are not spinning untill you advance the throttle and when you land the rotors stop(eventualy), or was i led up the garden path.... what is the hp5 a free turbine or will the rotors start turning once i start the heli like the wrens do.....

Do a search on 'air star' and you'll find that 99.9% of the feedback on the company......they suck! The .01% is the supporter of air star which is local.

The new market has taken over air star's antiquated design.

Vario dropped air star because air star was counterfeiting parts. And, mainly because of the lies air star would practice on vendors and consumers.

Just do a search and you'll see. air star's topic is old news so I'll just end it with this post. But, I'll continue to warn the new people who are just getting into this (turbine) hobby.

There are plenty of other good turbines to choose from.

I just recently bought another turbine....Bergen Intrepid Turbine. It will rock and roll or could be simply set up for sport flying or as a camera ship, best of all worlds.

Ferret,

If you're looking for a high performance turbine heli based on Vario parts you may want to check out the PowerCat. Joe Howard is selling these in the USA and he's a hell of a good guy. Since you're in Australia you may be better off ordering directly from the guys in Germany who produce the kit. Here are two links for more info:

Turbine conversion using Vario Parts

Ferret If you are looking for a conversion using 100% Vario (not side frames or base plate) look at HobbyParts, I have the HobbyParts Wren powered Vario Trainer conversion, also the HobbyParts JetCat SPH5 powered Vario Acrobatic conversion, any spares I just ring Vario

Hi ferret,

To have a go at answering your question about "free turbine".
The Wren and Jetcat are classed as "gas generators" because of the type or turbine wheel in the rear end of it, this thrust then blows onto the "second stage turbine wheel" which I guess is the free turbine then gets converted to shaft horsepower through the gearbox just like the real one.As the turbine winds up to idle the blades will already be turning.

Tony,
I just started building my Bergen two evenings ago and, although I have had some experience with Bergen machines, I have still found this to be one of the most well thought-out kits I have seen. Do you have your's flying yet?

The only problem I have now is when I have a question, do I go to the turbine or Bergen forum....j/k...I call Chris, Larry, Gary or Greg.

Happy to see you are in the new kit box, I love the way the Bergen is built. I loved it from day one and have never looked back. As always I try to pitch in my limited knowledge and it seems between Greg Chris and Larry we are making it work!! It will be a good time when we can all get together with them and heat up the atmosphere.
To all the Bergen owners present and future Thanks for beleiving in the Bergen Turbine, its nice to see a dream come true, and all of you guys are the ones who have made this a sucess.

To get this thread back on track, the air star Jetcopter SX is basically the same as the old Vario Jetcopter SX. Both were/are built by air star Intl., who use to be the Vario importer for the Americas. They originally used Vario parts to build the helis, but they are now using parts of their own design. The turbine and powertrain for either heli is the Jetcat PHT3/HP5.
Despite what the others say, the Jetcopter flys quite well, especially when you use 810mm V-Blades. It may not be the latest free turbine design, but they still fly great and burn kerosene.

Doc (I hope you don't mind me calling you Doc),

I'm not a builder. I wouldn't trust my work. All I know how to do is "fly and shoot (aerial)", and still practicing of course. That is why I had asked Chris to help build mine with his stamp of approval on it Chris is going to post pictures of the build so I hope it will help you incase you have questions. I do however can understand the principle and troubleshoot once I am trained on the Bergen.

I'm glad I chose the Bergen mainly for 'support'. Quality, it's a given. Chris and Gary have been very supportive.

It would be nice to meet you someday at perhaps a "Bergen gasser and turbine Fun Fly".

I'll get off this thread now and look for a new thread from Chris on the Bergen Intrepid Turbine build.

Thanks

Tony,
Good luck to you and, by all means, call me Doc...if I get a phone call and they ask for me by my "real" name, Sherry knows it's somebody we don't know. And, I will guarantee you we will hook up sometime in the next year...I'll usually be the one next to the "smoking hole."

Ferret,
To the best of my knowledge, yes the air star parts will exchange with the Vario parts. You can get Vario spares from the Vario distributor in Australia [url=http://au.vario-helicopter.biz/shop/index.php]. The air star parts would have to come from air star [url=http://air starintl.com/News.html].

Yes, the Jetcopter will do aerobatics quite nicely, especially with the V-Blades installed.

I understand your concerns about buying a secondhand heli. If you find one, be sure to check the runtime on the turbine. In the USA, it is recommended that the turbine be serviced every 25 hours.

I have to agree with the others that recommend the PowerCat. It is the same powertrain but utilizes the newer 12mm m/r shaft and 6 mm t/r shaft (versus 10mm m/r and 5mm t/r on my Jetcopter)

JetCopter

Hi Guys,

just a quick correction to the specs mentioned by someone else. The JetCopter SX is now being delivered with 12 mm shaft.

There are several upgrades done to the 2006 version of the JetCopter. We will announce the new model in two weeks time when we are done with the extensive flight testing.

JetCopter

I am curious to know why anyone would call a JetCopter outdated??? It is constructed around a JetCat, the most advanced turbine on the market, is 4 servo CCPM and the cream of the crop.

I am currently one of the testers of the new JetCopter 3D, and it is absolutely awesome. 810 mm V-blades, 1430 rpm head speed, 12 mm shaft, belt driven tail, stronger and taller landing gear along with other upgrades. And most important, it does not have all the cheap plastic parts most other turbine helis have.

The JetCopter rocks... Will upload some video soon.

Jetcopter

I like mine alot! It make big noise and goes fast. Great way to get into turbine helis and well built enough to make it a keeper.Spectators prefer it over the Pedator (I like them both, but then I like apples and oranges)

Oh boy are you behind the times.
The latest turbine systems use a free turbine in the exhaust, make 8HP at the same fuel consumption rate as the HP5, and run headspeeds in the 1700-1800 rpm range on 800mm blades. They are quieter, have less exhaust problems and are much smaller than the HP5. There are no high speed belts either.
Theres nothing wrong with the HP5, its just outdated when compared to the SPH5 or Wren

JetCopter

Peter,

They are two different designs and in two different price classes. The JetCopter is only $5500 for heli and turbine. That is the price for the SPH5 turbine alone. Here you get a complete heli included. Also, we where talking about outdated heli design, not turbine design.

FYI, I am perfectly aware that the SPH5 is more advanced.

I am getting a Cuatro with the SPH5 in about 3 or 4 weeks time. Completely different animal, but also a whole lot more $$$$$. IMHO, nothing beats the JetCopter when it comes to value, but I am looking very much forward to take the SPH5 for a spin

Outdated

Peter if you are saying those of us who like the Jetcopters are "behind the times" I must respond. I can see by your "behind the times" automobiles along side your modern automobiles that you also are diversified in your preferences. I also own a brand new Wren 2 stage system. I have a new personal vehicle and a fully restored 1953 Ford pickup (not exactly restored, it has late model running gear and 14" wide rear tires)and a couple in between. Many people like jazz and classical (and some that were born here like Country).Maybe I took the "outdated" remark wrong, but it came across something "backward, "behinds the times", "slow", "stupid," ect.It seems many on this board like to criticize anyone who is not just like them instead of just offering a personal opinion.

PS: I like Harleys too, alot of noise and they don't go very fast. The Brits also have some very cool old noisy oil leakers with two wheels.
