In the Fury Motor Mount thread, a statement was made to the effect that a metal fan is required to install GV-1 magnets. Is this true, or is it just easier to install the magnets in the metal fan?

Metal fan

It is just slightly easier to install in the metal fan.
In fact, I merely drill a dimple in the fan, deep enough for the magnet to sit flush with the outside and CA it in place. The key is to find a drill bit the same size as the magnet, so it is a snug fit.

The GV1 magnet is 4mm so you need a #21 drill bit.

A additional little trick is to drill a very small through and through hole in the center of the 4 mm well to allow excess glue to escape out the backside and to help key the magnet/glue joint to the fan. If the magnet hole is a snug fit, and Kevan is surely correct about that point, the glue has to go somewhere when you put the magnet in. The glue doesn't always ooze out the edges, and if it gets trapped, the magnet won't fully seat in the pocket.

magnet

Go with an optical sensor... just a thought. There was a long thread on these a few weeks back. Do a search and read from there.

Hi,

The only problem I had with the plastic fan was keeping it attached to the alluminum hub, pull the stock screws out of the inner part of the fan, throw them away after you find some hardend replacements the rite size (stock ones will shear)

Fill the screw hole with green loctite and put the new screw in (the loctite will be forced into the hole and will help to carry the load between the fan and hub).

Check the fan for balance, mark the lite side, dril a hole under one of the fan blades a few thousandths larger than the magnet (you have to leave a little room for the glue). Clean the magnet with rubbing alcohol, mark the side that needs to face the sensor and use 30 minute epoxy to hold it in (ca is too brittle). Make sure you clean the epoxy off the top side when it squeezes thru.

Balance it again after getting the magnet installed.

The metal fan is easier since its once piece, just depends on what you want to spend for a few extra minutes of work. Every fan test I've seen so far shows the metal fan does move a lot more air than the stock plastic fan but if you dont live in a hot climate its probably not worth worrying about.

Edit: Since you live in florida you might want to consider the metal fan for those hot summer days coming soon
