engines

How large are the hanson motors modified to?? is it 25cc?

Also, I may be confused, but for example, most glows run about 9:1 ratios? right... and gassers run around 7:1...

Why not jump up to the high rpm zenoahs with 15,000 rpm or more closely matched to the rpm range of the glows and use the 9:1 ratios in glows?

17,000 rpm motor with 9:1 ratio would spin ya about 1750 rpm's, which is within reason, plus these 17,000 rpm motors would put you at about 5 hp...

Cooling would be an issue as well as possibly speed of that wind-up. but all things considered, isn't it possible????

The Hanson modified G23 is just a timed and ported G23. There is no displacement change.

The gear ratio is not the issue, in fact, size is the issue. A 30 size engine produces it's best HP at around 17,000 RPM, a 90 at 15,000, and a 1.4 (a G23) at 9,000. So it isn't the gear ratio holding up the motor, it is the motor that requires the gear ratio to change in order to keep the RPM in it's best operating range.

Hope this help to clarify things,
Malorie

so why not!!

So why not upgrade to beyond the hanson to some of the higher end g23 and rc230 motors that run 17,000 rpm? Same engine, size wise and probably closely in weight wise as well... I noticed that hanson has a superhp engine with 6.5 horse on a water cooled 23... Use water cooling systems out of PC motherboards that cool cpus in computers... woooww!!

someday... by the way malorie, bought the bergen gasser from bergen this weekend...We'll see what it's like.

Have you taken a look at that heli? what kind of shape was it in in your opinion? I here it needs a good cleaning... know any of the history on it?

The short answer to your question is MONEY.

Yes, the ported Hanson engine does produce more HP at a higher RPM. You can certainly do that, and with the Hanson engine the Bergen Intrepid Gasser is a great performer.

I think putting a radiator on a heli of this size is a bit excentric, but if you try it I'd love to see video, or better yet, I'd love to fly it. LOL Can you imagine a gas heli turning 25,000RPM!!!! Man, what a noise!!!

I have not seen the Gasser that you bought flown. I looked it over and the only thing stopping me from buying it was all the extras. It has gotten dusty but other than that it looked great. I didn't need yet another radio and all the sevos and gyro. I really had no use for all that. However, If you would like to sell the work stand that is with it, I might be interested in that. I think you got a great deal, you should be pleased. My understanding is that the guy selling it only ran it a few times (I seem to remember less than a gallon mentioned). He was selling all his stuff because he is getting up in age. I guess that some people will let that stop them. Like working, I'll probably fly 'till I drop over dead.

Let me know how it turns out with your new gasser,
CONGRATS!!!

good to here someone elses opinion

I am glad you have at least looked at it and thought it was reasonable. My understanding is a cleaning is in order... Not a problem... I will probably sell radio and some other parts with it...

I may have to look into these radiated systems. CPU radiators run about 5 inches by 5 inches, reasonable to mount on a heli... and simply port back to a largly modified head in the tail. It would work... I"m sure with a little engineering.

The only need for that much rpm is during advanced manuvers, where heating would kick in and the air cooling would not be enough...witht his much horse, weight would not be a concern... as much a concern!

Imagine a gasser with 6 horses when you need it... that would rock.

later, thanks for the input on the heli.

What Larry Bergen and NASA found out years ago was that when you start trying to put that many horses through the current drive train it doesn't hold up.

The first twin engine that Bergen put together was for NASA for a few X-Cell Gassers that they wanted more power on. What NASA found out was that every time they gave it throttle/collective the engine would tear the teeth off the main gear. This is why the Bergen Industrial Twin has the double clutch, pinion, and main gear. Of course when you start beefing up the drive system you start gaining weight again. But, when you start to swing those 800mm blades the disc loading goes down again.

I've heard the story of CY tumbling the Bergen Industrial Twin numerous times. That must have been AWSOME!!!

I have had a chance to fly the Twin and it is very light on the sticks an an extremely smooth machine.

I guess if I wanted tons of power I'd just skip all the engineering nightmare and go by an Industrial Twin. I just don't think that the members of the club would appretiate a monster like that 3D'ing around the field, but it would be cool.

cool picture

Does that happen to be the straight framed 3der from bergen that is being tested as we speak? I heard them running it in the background as I talked with larry a week ago.

It looks like it might simplify the frame of these birds.... weight savings? stiffer?

That is the picture from JerBear that he asked someone to post for him a while back in this post.

That was me running the 3D Gasser in the background. At this point, the biggest advance has been the motor. The straight frame is actually weighing in heavier than the stacked frame version and not nearly as stiff. The stacked frame uses the motor as frame reinforcement. But it is fun to test pilot these things once in a while. The new motor is a bit heavier but is also more HPs. That machine is a real ripper.

I would like to see ANY gasser flying 3d. a video would be nice. I have been thinking of going to a gasser. I just need somone to show it.

Thanks

I'm not sure who came up with the idea that a gas version of the Fury would weigh 10 lbs.

It will have a number of improvements over the current gas XCell, including a better power to weight ratio and a better blade loading factor.

I think there is little chance it will weigh less than 11 lbs though. Of course an F18 weighs more than a Cessna 150, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

OK, there is a 30sec. video up for anyone who wants it.
The video is my Intrepid Gasser with the G23. I am now running the G26 and it really screams!

THANK YOU AUGUSTO!!!
