| RE: XL Gasser SetupHey!
I have had an XL Gas for 5 years now and I have just now figured out how to set up the motor, and minimize/eliminate all vibration.. It is smooth like Butta. The success of this model is very dependent on your throttle linkage setup and the ratio and kind of oil you are using in the motor. This is relatively easy to do. Go to www.ronlund.com and send him an email asking him to send you the "Bill Meador Article". He will know what you are talking about, expecially if you explain that you are new to setting up a gasser. To make a long story short, this guy (Bill Meador) found out that the carb. barrel must be quite a bit more open than you would think when hovering. However, you can't achieve this without running a fairly high (50/1) gas oil ratio. His method works great and I have many gallons through my gasser with this setup. I recomend you keep the head speed under 1750rpm, as the gas motor does'nt like to rev (vibrates) high. Also, clean your spark plug every 3 or 4 flights to avoid interference caused by carbon on the plug.. don't laugh it's true.. Also, I HIGHLY RECOMEND that you use a whip antenna or mount an antenna tube on the battery holder and drill a hole in the front of the canopy, running the antenna and holder out through it. If you get that antenna anywhere NEAR the motor you will get interference. I promise.. Also, I run only FM, no PCM on gas/ignition models.. If you get "hit" from the ignition system and you are using PCM it is highly likely that it will lockout.. However, with FM, spark noise only causes small "bumps" in the controls. All of this is my opinion, and others may have had different experiences. This is one of my favorite choppers... Any other questions?????
