I'm interested to find out how oily your helis get.
I'm runnning a Caliber 30 with an OS32 using model technics 10% fuel.
Although the engine is still being run in and so is being run a little rich, it seem to chuck out loads of oil.
An oily film covers the inside of the fan shroud and I assume that this is caused by fuel originating from the carburetter intake.
Would an air filter help? should I change my fuel or is this level of oiling normal.

What fuel is it? if its any of the GX/GN or long life series that is your problem. they contain 20%castor oil. Castor oil while doing a good job of lubricating makes loads of mess. try switching too one of the othe mixes like:

Dynaglow
Helimix
Supaglow
or Duraglow
that is if u are not using one of these already

Here is modeltecnics websire for more details:

Sorry to say, I don't get any exhaust oil inside. Just the drips on the landing struts and the back of the mainframe.

I used to get the same problem on my Concept 30 and it was due to a leak in the fuel tank, although I guess the problem could occur from any leak within the fuel system. Have you checked really carefully to ensure there are no leaks, as after I changed my fuel tank I had problems with fuel all over my helicopter.

all the best,
Steve.

I'll check the fuel system for leaks as a precaution, but I think the main culprit is going to be the fuel I am using. I'll change to a synth fuel and see if that improves things. Thanks for your help guys

Anybody know if fitting an air filter will help stop this?

I don't think the filter will make a big differance. I ran about a three inch piece of carbon rod out the back of my exhaust pipe. I used half of the hobbico deflector to join the rod to the muffler and then put the other half(the part with the bend) on the end of the rod. This made all of the differance in the world. Not even the slightest film on the chopper after a twenty min. flight. Be sure to use the largest carbon rod that you can find. You don't want to inhibit the exhaust from exiting the muffler.

That sounds like a good idea. There are a few variations on that which I think are worth investigating. Thanks

one possible cause

Flew today and still no oil on the works.I have a 4" silicone exhaust diverter. I found something that might be a clue though. I had fuel dripping out of the front screw in the muffler, which ran down the inside of the canopy. I could imagine it the leak was worse, it could blow exhaust all over the inside.

I have found that the silicone exhaust diverter makes a BIG difference in the amount of oil that your heli swims in!!

Before the diverter , I would have to wipe off a lot of oil. After the diverter, the cleanup job is a lot less. Also, when I switched from Castor to Synthetic, the mess became less!

I thought the fuel may play a part in the problem. I'm running castor at the moment but will switch to synthetic once its all gone.
Another possibility is the standard (oem) fuel piping running from the fuel filter to the carb, so thats for replacement too.

.. and after a short run tonight, I found the muffler was loose, so maybe thats it.
Running the stock Caliber muffler atm. Is there any benefit in changing to a zimmerman quiet muffler?

Just wipe the bugs off your blades and your done!

I added a three inch peice of carbon rod (with the inside dia. the same as the exhasust/muffler exit) to the stock muffler on my caliber 30. I put this on the muffler and made an extension to get the exhaust away from the helicopter.

Now when I am done flying, instead of a oily mess that I use to have deal with I now just wipe the bugs off the blades and finish draining the tank.

The only way to tell if I have flown at all would be the bug stripes on the blades.

Oh, "Hack" that front fin off of the canopy, it is a lot easier on the eyes.
