Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Falcon 50 Pushrod Question!

Thanks to those of you who responded to my previous Falcon 50 building questions! The forum has been very helpful!

I am at Step 40, the Collective and Roll Setup. Jimmyhua, in his Falcon 50 building review, says that the Aileron Bellcrank Pushrods(F) actually need to be shorter than their specified 160mm. That is my belief also! After aligning the elevator servo wheel as required and connecting the aileron pushrods(both are right at 160mm) to the aileron bellcranks the bellcranks are not in the position shown on page 27. They are not square with the heli frame. The aileron pushrods would need to be shortened a little to pull the bellcranks back so they are square with the frame. I hope this makes sense. Is the 160mm pushrod length a sacred number, or should I just shorten the pushrods as needed to bring the bellcranks into the position shown on the plan?

Step 40 also says to put the 2 steel balls onto a round servo arm at a distance of 10 to 11mm from the center of the servo and a few degrees ahead of the center of the servo. I understand that the balls need to go a few degrees ahead of the center of the servo to attain a 90 degree angle between the line described by the pushrods and the line described between the center of the servo and the ball joint on the servo wheel. The aileron pushrods angle out towards the bellcranks which I understand makes this necessary. My Hitec servo wheel has holes that are 10mm from the center of the servo and perhaps more than a few degrees ahead of the center of the servo. Once the aileron pushrods are in place under this scenario there is definitely less than a 90 degree angle between the line described by the pushrods and the line described between the center of the servo and the ball joint on the servo wheel. What should I do? Should I use a straight servo arm that would put the 2 balls in line with the center of the servo? Then the angle would be greater than 90 degrees! I am a perfectionist, unfortunately, and would like to set it up as described. What is critical and what isn't?

Sorry to be so wordy! Hopefully the length of this post did not scare everybody off! Inexperience is my enemy! Any thoughts will be appreciated! Thanks, MJS

MJS,

on my Falcon I ended up with ball links 3mm front of the center line, and 11.5mm out from center to get 90 degree linkages, and 100% ATV's. I use Futaba servo's so I can drill the holes exactly where they need to go. I do not know if the Hitec wheel has a hole close to this. If they have a wheel that has no pre drilled holes in it then you could drill your own.

Getting this correct reduces any mix of aileron-elevator, or aileron-pitch being induced by the linkages not pulling/pushing evenly.

You could shorten the linkage's without a problem. Make sure the collective is at 0 degrees when you check them to get them square. And make sure there is no trim or sub trim in your radio throwing the lengths off. After everything is set up correctly, then make trim adjustments to make it hover properly.
