I'll be starting my Vertol soon and I'm interested in some tips and links for detailing the heli. A site I found for photos here

A couple of things I'm interested are:

Working winch with a cargo hook
True to scale lighting as well as where to find them

I'd like to add a working cargo ramp and free up the front wheel for ground taxi.

Anyone?

Thanks,
Don

Nothing huh?

I was hoping that this site my be helpful during this build. I was told of another site, ScaleRChelis that I guess I'll have to run over to for this.

Thanks anyway.

My DIY Vertol

Hi,
You may look in my gallery and see my huge tandem project. It is twice the size of the Hirobo small tandem and it flies much better. It's all self designed and manufactured by me, the fuse is made from curved balsa and plywood. I'm finishing the cockpit details now and then I will fly it with the fuse.

Eyal M., Nice scratch build! Lifts over 25 pounds, amazing!.

rotorpsyco,
Copterdoctor must have rotated his photos. Still some great scale detail photos though. The links you showed me have some really great stuff. I'm not so sure I can acomplish anything near the level of detail as some of these guys but I should have fun with this build either way.
You've really been a great help so far. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. From what you've told me so far I'm looking foreword to seeing your finished project.
I went down to MRC yesterday to have lunch with Jeff and to pick up the kit. He showed off the CH-47 he built. Hirobo did a really nice job putting this kit together with the avionics package as well as the construction of the mechanics.
When I got home I pulled the painted fuse out to see what I was getting into. The painting is second to none and the level of detail out of the box is simply amazing. The kit is pricey but seems to be well worth it.

Thanks again!

No prob Dg, glad to help....others have helped and continue to help me along the way and I'm grateful for that... glad I could pass something along... I look forward to seeing your build....heck if I would have gotten the painted fuse I think I would have been done by now!

Oh I do believe that copterdocters photos were uploaded to the full scale section of the spot... you may want to try there....if not I'll get them retrieved from my confuser in the next few days....hopefully before I go out of town...

Well even though I've beel a little occupied with Christmas I've gotten it pretty far I think. I'm up to creating all the link arms and installing the receiver, gyro, and the mixer.

Other photos are in my gallery.

Thanks!

This one hell of a kit. I ran out of locktite at one point because of all the screws holding it together. They designed this thing like it was a bridge. I guess since any twisting of the frame could make it unstable in flight.

All I'm waiting for is a receiver since I ordered a Futaba by mistake. Once that get's here I can start building up the linkages and routing all of the wires. Then it's off to MRC to let Jeff look it over for me and give me some pointers of tweaking the mixer control.

Work in progress.

Thanks Stan,

I pulled a receiver out of my Bell 47 so that I could start installing the link rods (there must be 20) and the ballance of the electronics.

It should be ready for a test flight by next weekend.

I had a good night tonight. All of the linkages are in and are as mechanically aligned as I can get them. The mixer has been adjusted so that all of the controls work as they should. The swash plates are level as can be.

The kicker was the manual for setting up the mixer which was pointed out to me by modtron. Without this I had no chance of getting it done.

I had servos reversed which can't be changed through the radio as you would do on a single head heli. I had to switch out a couple of mixes to allow the swash plates to tilt properly through the aileron and also the rudder inputs.

Everything is acting as it should now. Next thing to do is to start setting the blade pitch on all SIX blades and to secure the battery, switch, Duralite regulator, and receiver. Once that's done I can spool it up to condition the main drive belt without the blades in place then check and tighten it as required.

I've ordered the lighting kit from Starwoods and looking into a cargo hook so I can take E30TECH's cat for a ride

So far I've added up my time and I'm up to less than 12 hours. I figure I've got another 4 or so until I have the fuse on it. So far it's been a blast getting into something so technical. Learning how to fly it should be just as much fun.

good job DG you cant go wrong with the gear your using....I hope you went through starwood for your light kit..... seems that curtec if you buy from the manufacture is quite slow....

Yes I did. I'm also thinking about their cargo hook. It's a little pricey but at least is comes with it's own servo.

I'll have a couple more photos to share once I get it running. The wire harness came out really clean as well considering all of the servos had extensions added onto them. Plus I put in a GV-1 so I had the sensor wire that had to feed all the way back.

Thanks again for the help and kind words.

Time!!!!

Twelve hours to be as far along as you are is incredible.... I would have thought a lot longer then that.... great job....
And glad to hear you were able to get the info on the mixer....
But can you tell us why the info was not included in the kit??? Sounds as if it should be since it is so important to the build??

And PLEASE post a picture of the "cat" taking a ride....

Looking forward to seeing this baby in the air.....

The manual that was included in the kit showed just basic information. Maybe the manual was left out in error.

I will tell you that without it I had no hope of getting everything to work as it should unless I sat there and just started hitting buttons until I figured out what did what.

As far as the time to get as far as I am, I think that by first reading and understanding the manual had a lot to do with it. There are quite a few small details that could be done wrong forcing a lot of rework.

Having everything I needed to build it all laid out and just moving step by step made it go pretty quickly. The manual is very clear as well and all of the steps are packaged perfectly. The longest step was building the linkages. Having the link tools with one in an electric drill made that part easy. I built all of them at once and sized the ends. When it came time to install them I only had minor adjustments to make to ensure all of the bell cranks were 90* to the links.

Crash enough helis and building them gets pretty easy.
