Something different

Mine is on the Hawk IV, but essentially the same. I mounted on top of the fuel tank, underneath the tail boom. I've never seen it done before, but it works just fine. Also seems like a pretty protected area. I haven't had any problems.

I was concerned about the flat area just behind the engine because it is less than the 10 cm recommended.

Don't do that....

I would not recommend mounting the 401 on it's side like they show mounting the PG2000 in the manual. I have not tried it, but have been told the 401 will not work well at all like that. I also believe the 401 manual states to mount it flat. I mounted mine flat just tucked it in there with enough of the gyro sticking out to adjust it if needed. Works just fine there.

Todd,
What about fuel leaking on it or getting sprayed onto it from the muffler? I would also be concerned about the vibrations from the fuel tank. I thought about the mount behind the engine also, but opted not too for the very same reason of fuel exposure.

The 401 combo works great in mine and it is well protected up front.

I've never had a fuel leak problem. It gets a little oily, but no more than any other part of the helicopter. I have an exhaust deflector that keeps any exhaust away from the gyro. As for vibration, do you think the fuel tank is actually vibrating more than any other part of the frame, or is it just obvious because the fuel is visible and being sloshed around inside? Regardless, the 401 holds my tail rock solid. I've had several crashes, 3 of which busted up the bottom radio tray up front and could have easily damaged my gyro. (1 this morning - bad autorotation ) Where the gyro is located, its never received a scratch.

Something I found...

I was reading the 401 manual yesterday as I was cleaning up the toolbox and I found that note about the 10cm thing. It was refering to a "motor" not and engine. I believe it actually means an electric motor like in the Logo or other electrics. I have heard a few things about them causing the gyro to "glitch" from some of the Logo pilots. Just FYI.

I built me a little plywood plate, and mounted it up front by the other radio gear. Works fine.

GYRO MOUNT

I went with something like McSwains idea. I can;t post pics on here so I will have to explain it.

I took a dremel to the 2 sides of the upper frame behind the rotor head just above where the boom slides in to make it level. I 5 min epoxied 2 pieces of plexiglass on top to make a flat surface with a slit down the middle so the frame halves can still be taken apart. I mounted the gyro in that spot so it is completely away from the engine. I have had no problems with this setup. If you ever have to split the frame, pull the gyro and all the tape off, and retape when you put it all back together. If you like I can email a pic. Hope this helps.

Have my tail rotor servo back on the tail boom so made a plywood plate that I attached to the stock servo position with an extension forward of the tray by about an inch so I could get the 10 cm distance and mounted my gyro there. Stays clean under the canopy. Seems to work fine.

Solid so far

I cross laminated two 1/8 ply pieces together, then sanded the edges smooth, and sealed it with ca glue to keep fuel out. Then I screwed it to the heli with two screws at the little ledge in the front of the servo's. You could even put ca on the screws if you wanted. It has been holding rock solid so far.
