Both for me!

I fly the plank to remember how much fun the helis are... and on days like today when the ski and long runway takeoff and landing are kinda fun...

I started with Cox U-control planes as a kid. When I was 7 years old I talked my mom into giving me $35 for a R/C model airplane kit. When I opened the box up at home the only thing in the box was a bunch of wood. This really confused the 7 year old! I tried to take the kit back but they wouldn't take it back because the box was opened. BUMMER!

A neighbor helped me build the model plane and that's how I started in R/C over 30 years ago.

I've taught dozens of people how to fly R/C planes over the years. Many of which still fly today.

I've always wanted to fly R/C helis and in the summer of 2000 I decided to give it a try. I'm happy to say that I now fly R/C Helis and Planes! And, hopefully....someday, I'll consider myself to be competent enough to teach others to fly helis! That's not too far off though!

Have fun!

I like helis!

I fly both, but I have recently decided to get rid of my fixed wing models. I will only keep a zagi, which is great for air combat and a pylon racer for very high speed flying.

I find fixed wing models very boring. You progress with aerobatics very quickly and even if things go wrong when trying something new, there is enormous time to recover (compared with helis).

Both

I fly both regularly. I started with fixed-wing about 38 years ago and just got into helis early in 2001. They're different and I like the variety. To all those who claim planks are boring, try hovering torque rolls at 3-4' off the ground, that will get your adrenaline pumping as much as heli flying does!

Then diversify. I've been "planking" for 15 years, and like you, was getting a bit bored. Then I met a new flying buddy with some new ideas.

I'm currently building a Top Flite Contender that will have a 70 Surpass in the nose. Yes, major over-powered. But until you've played with a grossly over-powered sport model, you simply cannot imagine how much fun they are. The Contender has a central flap that makes a STOL plane out of it. This model is the most versatile of the dozens I've flown. It tracks and handles like a pattern plane, yet will get totally ignorant with the proper set-up. This is due to the broad-chord wing. Who needs a profile fun-fly type to do all that crazy stuff? Not me. I'm beginning to understand the guys who stuff a 46/50 engine into a plastic 30...

Once the Contender is done, there is a quarter-scale CAP 232 sitting in the box waiting it's turn. With a wingspan of 73", it is considerably larger than any other model I've built. Lots of things to think about here, since everything is bigger and more stressed. Ya gotta make sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed.

I tried the electric thing and was considerably underwhelmed. When battery technology catches up with the rest of the hobby, I'll try it again.

But my point is that there are many other avenues to explore. I agree with Ed; the planks keep me from getting burned out on helos, and vice versa.

you think helis are a rush, go down 3 feet over the runway with a twenty grand jet, I don't plan to do that with mine just yet.

Planks and helis

I also fly both, mainly because I'm our small clubs instructor. I prefer heli's but I'm the only heli flyer in our county. Also, airplanes are relaxing after playing with the helis.

I also fly both, airplanes since 1975 and helis since'78...I gave up planes in 1983 to concentrate on Full size and helis. I got a Giles 202 last year and joined the local club with an eye to "pushing the Envelope" at the field as far as helis are concerned...seems to have worked...I'm now on the board and Sharks will host a heli get together sometime in July (hopefully the 12th,13th and 14th)! Mark you calenders...Chris

Planes and heli's

I started out with helis about 9 years ago then quit. I started into planes about 4 years ago. Into aerobatics and ducted fan jets. I just started back into helis and hope to stay with it this time.

rapidraptor - that torque roll you mentioned is very impressive thing .. definitely takes skill .. I can do it with the heli at height , but with an airplane would like to achieve that manuver low to the deck too . absolutely right on .. soon as I get my xtra300 cleaned up I will try it ..

steve - thanks - right on, it's all about the flying. an autogyro, parasail, even a flying lawnmover or toiletseat would get me excited, what a blast ..

Gotta fly both, Helis are the challenge, Planks are the relaxation.

Now I have respect for any one who builds them planes from a kit and more so from scratch. Both of my helis only took 1-2 weeks to get up into the air. My Astro Hog has taken me 4 months to finish.

Air Vista (dead and buried)
Big Stick (still getting broken-in... more broken than in)
Astro Hog (gonna take it up nextime out... kinda hard to build)
Somthin' Extra (one wing on my building board)

I have been flying r/c for 14 years or so and have spent the last 4 1/2 on helicopters. I like helicopters more, but still put a giant scale airplane into the sky on occasion! The park flyers and Zagis have become quite popular locally also (have one of each!).
