not to change the subject lol. but gonna, dont fly caliber in grass rudder blades way to close to ground already lol. today started on parking lot and ran threw batter after almost 11 minutes of easy flight and was forced to grass and broke on rudder blade holder . i think they need to make the blades smaller or make the heli alittle higher. but i really love the stability of this hell over my twitchy trex lmfao.

ADDICTED TO HELIS ~ too much FUN

Funny i had exact the opposite. I hit the concrete with the tail, damaged the tail blades, grips and tail shaft. Now i only fly off grass.

I have a hard time understanding why you say it is no 3D monster when I can do anything with mine that you can do with any other electrics now that it has a good brushless motor and battery. I have changed nothing to the heli itself yet as there are no option parts yet but should be soon. There is no doubt that the motor/pinion/battery makes all the difference. Out of the box with stock motor you will be able to do some mild aerobatics but not real 3D. This model is much more stable than the competition also. I am not sure if stability is of interest to everybody but to me it is real important to have a machine that is not such a handful to hover for those times when I want to enjoy graceful flying.

Rcheliworks will be doing testing for the next few days on one with a few different motors and will report our findings

Dwight, i love the stability of the Cal thats why i enjoy flying it.
I am also a regular player in the hobby market. I dont work for a hobby company or get sponsored by one. I pay my money to play with these toys. I have a collection of E helis and think i am in a position to judge the merits of them. (current collection of 30+ E helis).
I dont come here to push a barrow for a reseller or manufacturer. My opinions are mine and are not influenced by outside forces.
I look forward to reading how well you top pilots can fly these things and your views on them but i always have questions in the back of my mind about the impartiality of those views.

I am glad you think the Cal is up to the performance of other helis in the market and your setup must be amazing but i have only tried 3 different motors on mine and it will in no way keep up with trex for all out hard flying. The tail isnt as strong and the cyclic rate isnt as quick. The slop from the control system is a disgrace on a heli from a quality manufacturer and their response is very poor compared to Align.

I think it is only fair for the readership to hear the views of normal blokes like me and not just the superstars.

If i am not mistaken you are one of the worlds top pilots and could fly a brick better than i will ever fly but i suspect more flyers have skills closer to mine than yours.

I am not trying to get into an argument about the machine but would like to give it a fair chance. It is difficult for me to see someone give a bad feedback on any machine based on very limited testing. This has been the case for years not just on this machine. It seems now days that the day a machine hits the street is has to be perfect in order for people to give it a chance. No machine can acheive that. I guarantee that every machine you fly wasn't as good when you first flew it as it is today. In the early stages the T-rex had bad comments until people figured out how to make certain things work. Every machine has good and bad habits initially but most things can be either improved or changed by the pilot with a little ingenuity.
One simple truth is that once you get the right motor and pinion installed these micro machines they fly very well. As for the control system I am not feeling any problems during 3D flight even though you are seeing free play on the bench. This was the reason for a previous post when I commented on system loading. I would like to see "0" tolerance but whether I can feel any difference is another thing.
Maybe the servos have somthing to do with this feel but I am using Futaba 3103 servos. It will be interesting to see this forum and comments 6 months from now.

It's true that the first Trex (and to a lesser degree the V2) had a lot of problems. The difference between the early Trex and the early Cal 400 is the company support behind the products. Align made huge strides in fixing all of the problems with the early Trex. The Trex is the Raptor of the electric world. Virtually every hobby shop in the country carries repair parts and upgrades. Kyosho on the other hand has shown little interest in supporting their products (at least that has been my experience with my Cal 30). Ironically my Cal 30 flies with a variety of Raptor parts installed due to lack of availability of Kyosho parts. But this probably isnt a problem for a factory sponsored pilot like yourself.

Are they now selling without the brushed motor? When this thread started the only way you could get the Cal 400 was in a package deal with a brushed motor. Your comments about using a brushless setup would seem to confirm that this is a marketing mistake.

Longer tail - EP400

I added a bent wire to lenghten the tail only to the level of the struts being level on the ground. No more rug/grass burn. Heliwizard agrees. He took pride in his discovery. My thanks to Dwight & Boyd helping me get it off the ground. A little drift, might be from the slop in the tail slider?? A nice smooth slow flier.

This is kind of an unrelated issue with regard to this thread, but according to your profile you live in San Diego. I live in Iowa, and bought my Caliber from Heliproz in Montana three years ago....I have never in the three years that I've owned a Caliber had ANY trouble getting parts for them. None of my Calibers has been down due to unavailability of parts. Heliproz has always been there, and more recently, Chris at RC Heliworks has done a phenomenal job of having parts in stock and ready to ship. Either way, parts are a few mouse clicks and never more than 4 days away from Iowa.

Unfortunately,
Heliproz will probably not be carrying, or supporting the Caliber400. Here's the e-mail I got from Eric Hawkinson.

50 yes, electric probably not as it seems to have no advantage over the
T-Rex etc. 50 is not due until after new years according to Kyosho.

Thanks

Subject: Kyosho Caliber EP400 ???

Hello,
Do you plan on carrying the new Kyosho Caliber EP400 helis?
If so, do you have a time frame they will be available?
What about the Caliber5 .50 size?
Thanks,
Mike Reed

From a dealer standpoint I would think that you would want carry a choice of machines so the public can make a decision to do business with you no mater what machine they buy. If someone is thinking they might want something you don't carry they will likely buy somewhere else rather than change their mind. This is always a tough choice for dealers when it comes to stocking kits and parts since there is overhead to think about. With time I think this will resolve itself as the Caliber 400 becomes a proven machine.

You are 100% right on that. Back in the early 90's when I was racing 1/8 scale off road buggies, I worked at a hobby shop and the market was big for 1/8 scale. The big contenders were the Kyosho Inferno and the Ofna Pirate. The Pirate was the only one we carried in the shop and our competition store carried both. Needless to say, the competition killed us and our shop ended up closing up. Not saying that was the only cause there was for closing but just one of the many things my boss wouldn't listen to me about.

Carrying multiple models is very important. You will get a wider customer base, which in turn will bring more profit. If heliproz isn't going to carry the 400, they might be shooting themselves in the foot once the 400 makes a name for itself. JMO of cousre.
