Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Fixing the hub's loose bolt problem

Ever since I assembled my first Fury I've been bothered by the idea of having the washout hub's (#0571-1) bolts (#0093) secured as per the instructions.

In the instructions it says: "Tighten the bolt until some drag is felt when rotating and unscrew the bolt about one quarter turn" but I didn't like the idea of "having a loose screw"

Noticing that the threaded hole passed all the way to the other side it occurred to me that I could solve the problem by adding a counter setscrew (Dubro part 2168) from the other side. Once you have the bolt set as desired for free movement just tighten the setscrew to lock it in place. I know it's simple and I wonder how come MA didn't think about it. Some people have been buying some X-Cell PRO parts to fix this problem but I think this is a pretty inexpensive way to solve it.

I'll send MA an e-mail with the suggestion. Maybe they can include a couple of 3mm set screws in future kits.

Set screws

Many of us have been doing that for some time now.
It works great.

Green Loctite

The other way to secure these bolts is to use the Green Loctite (for wicking). The green is very thin and wicks down into the threads making them tight and stationary.

Use green loctite and the set screw and that sucker isn't going anywhere!

I know Loctite is supposed to keep it secured but knowing that arm is going up and down at 1800 rpm's and that I can't tighten the bolt and that it's held in place only with loctite makes me feel uneasy. I just like to have the peace of mind that I know it's mechanically secured.

An excellent trick that I've used for years. I will note that some hubs are not threaded all the way through to be able to put the jamb set screw in place. On my Fury, I had to run a tap all the way through to complete the threading. Easy job.

Also, you could get the sleeve kit or make sleeves for the bearings to ride on and then just crank down on the screws without binding.

Part #0597

Cole,

If you order the MA 0597 spacer kit this takes care of the problem on the wash out arms, bell mixers & tail control bellcrank, these are machined brass spacers that allow the mounting bolt to be tightened fully.

Spacer kit helps

The spacer kit helps, but you still need the keep the screws from loosening up. Set screws or green loctite is a must.

I hope that people know to loctite screws that go into metal. Thats helicopter building 101 stuff. Anyways, with the spacer kit, I bet blue loctite would work just fine. I don't have the spacer kit, so I used green loctite and set screws behind them to mechanically lock them.
