Have a new Hawk Sport and I need to replace the Main Shaft in it. Was wondering if you can change it with out having to split the upper frames?

Had a problem with the gyro (see posting in Main Discussion forum "GY240 Gyro Problem in FF"). Any one have any ideas on the problem I had in that post also?

Thanks
Jim

main shaft removal

take head off heli, pop all balllinks loose, take bolt out of autogear, loosen allen screws on mast stopper.
then try to pull main shaft out. if shaft only comes out so far you may have to use some light sandpaper on shaft where allen screws made marks on shaft.

Mainshaft removal

Jimm

I may be from the "old school" in that I always have found it useful to refer to the manual when repairing a new helicopter of which I may not be totally familiar with yet........heck I even do it with those I think I am very familiar with just to insure my "familiarity" was not in error.

If you look at the detailed manual supplied with your Sport (refered to in the very first part of your Sport quick-build guide) and I quote:

" NOTE: We suggest that you refer to the more detailed instructions... if you require more comprehensive instructions or ever need to repair an assembly after a mishap"

In these great detailed instructions (by far the best in the industry IMHO) you will find the drawings etc. on page10 (step 11) and page11 (step 13) showing the configuration of the mainshaft and how it all fits into the mainframe. From this you should be able to figure out (as explained by ltaustin) how it can be removed from the top, simply by removing the M3 x 16 socket head screw from the maingear autorotation hub (HW3050) and by loosening the two M4x4 set screws from the Mast Stopper (HW3054A), Of course I am assuming that you have removed the rotor head for attachment to the new mainshaft.

Please note that I am posting this, not as a criticism of any sort but rather to insure that any reader, not familiar with the Century Hawk Spor, is made aware of the fact that they come with very informative manuals. That these manuals would be very helpful in assisting anyone in repairing their heli in the case of a mishap.

Enjoy your flying and welcome to the reliable world of the Century Hawk Sport.

I refered to the manual and that appeared to be the best way to do it but wanted to confirm that my guess was correct.

Thanks for the help.

Main Shaft Removal

I'll bet I've done this a dozen times in the last two months:

All I do:

1. Remove bolt and locknut from bottom of main gear.
2. Loosen two allen screws in mast stopper and make sure it slides down the shaft.
3. Snap off the two "aileron" bellcrank links from the swashplate.
4. Snap off the elevator link off the front of the swashplate.
5. Remove the screw from the anti-rotation bracket on the rear (only if you have one - this is an optional part)
6. Put your helicopter on the floor and stand over the top of it.
7. Place one foot on either skid
8. Grab the rotor head by the blade grips (much easier if you've removed your blades) and give a little tug.
9. She pops right out.

Before I reinstall it, if using the same main shaft I take some fine emery cloth and clean up the small burrs caused by the head stopper. The then the shaft slides right in.
