I couldn't imagine that Futaba would allow their top of the line product be unreliable in any way. The radio does look amazing for sure and is way beyond what I need at my present level of flying.
Great Info nocontrol. I was considering a Stylus or JR though as they are cheaper. But will go for the Stylus as it's under 500 bucks I think.
I would love to get the Futaba, but I'd love a 1970 Hemi Cuda too.!
Since I can't afford either It's nice to know they're there.
Also lots of stuff on the Futaba will eventually trickel down to the lower priced radios.
Thanks for the info.

The 14MZ....

1. do I need it? No
2. does it make me a better pilot? No
3. Is it 100% reliable? Nothing is
4. are there other Tx's that do basically the same things? Yes
5. Is it the best Bang for the bucks? No

Nevertheless I bought one a couple of months ago. Why?

because:

1. I have spent way over $2000 in some birds that can crash at any moment, so why don't invest in a $2000 radio that you always take home with you.

2. I love the simplicity and the millions of features this radio has. Take the expo feature for example. When I was starting out I would have loved the offset setting in the expo menu to put the stick just like I wanted (at 3/4 stick hover)... all other radios that I know (9c, 9z) only take expo at center stick. Big improvement. Can you replicate it on other radios? Yes. But it will take some time and effort to acomplish.

3. I love the frequency change feature... no more worries, no more cristals... just choose a high freq nobody uses and thats it.

4. Voice confirmations - stupid for some, very usefull for distracted ppl like me.

and finally

5. Because I can and I rather spend it on a radio than in nightclubs, beers, drugs or other stuff. My family isn't starving or suffering because of it so what's the big deal here?

Nobody is talking about the guys that build a $6.000 turbine heli and crash it!

My 0,02 cents

Tony

I also do not drink, smoke or go to night clubs and the guys that go ..... a big whoo haaa about us paying $2000 for something we can afford and would like to own. I can do all my driving in a 1100cc car but still I own something bigger!!!!

I've found since getting mine that chicks dig me more, I get better service in restaurants, and I look thinner.

I am well pleased!!

My absolute ONLY complaint is the battery consumption -

But you know what, I carry 2 extras to the field.

The software update just made it possible to switch on air from one chan to the next with out restart and that is really nice.

The ease of tweaking and changing settings, Gov, Gyro etc while flying is unbeatable.

I like my 10X and 9CHPS but I really like the MZ

It has some drawbacks too... My 9C looks pretty cheap now compared to the MZ and ppl expect me to fly according to the radio which I obviously can't

Cheers

I get an average of 2 hours per charge stopping at 30% to 40%. This is +/- 8 flights including start, etc.

I have 1 extra battery, which is plenty for me since I have NEVER flown 16 flights in a day!! 4 hours of on time in a single day would be way over my concentration limit.

I also just picked up the Futaba CR-2500 field charger which can charge the 14MZ pack as well as NiMH and Nicad packs (6-cell 2,000 mAh max). It also charges a glow driver. Kind of pricey, but Oh Well. It charges the TX battery IN the TX so I don't have to pack my AC charger when I go out of town for contests, etc.

Hummm.

I have a Lion/lipo field charger... I wonder if I could charge that battery on the Field or at home with it in the TX... on my last field trip I forgot the battery at home bummer

Cheers

At the very least you would need to get one of the odd plugs to go into the TX.

I have looked at various electronics supply places here in the US and I have not been able to find a similar plug. It is a very small 3-pin plug with 3 raised parts on one side, kind of like the old Airtronics plugs, just much smaller.

It will be interesting to see what revisions futaba are going to make to the MZ over the next 6 months. Then I'll buy one

It will also be interesting to see the trickle down affect all this new tech will bring to lower priced units of all brands.

14MZ...

Firstly, don't worry over the CE Windows interface. It has nothing to do with radio flight functions. I find that after all this time people still think Windows is flying the aircraft. It's not and never has been. Get over it. Secondly, if you're that in need of a fancy radio that won't cost as much go with the 12Z. It will do 99% of what anyone here will need, but at a lower cost and for those that are phobic over "Windows" the 12Z doesn't use the CE interface.

Later...

Scott!

I want a 14mz,But I really only need the 12mz.
It's my understanding that both radio's share a lot of similar features. Except minus the 2 extra channels and the color windows operation of the 14mz,is the 12mz basically the same as it's bigger brother?

Old chinese proverb.don't dwell on past crash, but look forward to future flight
