be careful what you say around these parts. people will label you a futaba/14mz hater in no time if you say negative.

if you take a look through some of the pages you will probably find 4 threads on something or other going on with them.

im gonna do it for ya though, save you the scarlet letter

some of these may be outdated, but they were posted and replied to fairly recently.

i really dont think its a bad radio, but there is a price to be paid for cutting edge technology. for $2000 i would expect it to be perfect. which could be said is unrealistic, but im no guinea pig. *edit: on the other hand, there are many who have had 0 issues.

once all the kinks are worked out and its a smooth operator, i fully intend on owning one.

its a sexy looking radio to top it off

Like not knowing how it works and not knowing what you did to make it not work right and then blaming Futaba for something they thought would work but they Say you know Nothing and so on.
I would Never buy a radical new car or radical new radio that was in it's first or second year of production. Too Many Variables that I know Nothing about! I heard you could watch DVD's at the Field Right on this radio,,if you watch a DVD what channel will you shoot down?
I'll let YOU Pioneers do the all the work.
I hope the 14MZ discovers AMerica intact!!
Good luck and God Bless America

How are all of your 14mz doing

I have been using A 14mz for a while now, and this is just my experience.
One lock out due to a carbon undercarriage rubbing on the MP2 exhaust, simple auto and all ok (my fault ) but nothing ever since.

Although there are others on here that are speaking of constant lockouts ?

I use three 5014 RX's, two in heli's and one in a plank, also using several other futaba and non Futaba RX's with this TX and not a problem at all.

Do I need the TX, hhhhhmmmmmm, don't tell the wife, but I certainly do not need it, 9X is more than good enough for every thing I do TBH

Not heard of that one ?? from my understanding there is two processors, one does the computer side and the other does the transmitting side, if the likely one (computer programme processor) crashes then all is still well and good with the TX/RX connection ?

This is kinda impossible! The 14mz has two isolated processors. The one is simply for interface and user inputs to the programming and the software for the CE. Once the programming is saved it gets sent to the 2nd processor. This processor is not interfaced to anything else but to process all the stick inputs and switches. As long as there is power to this processor, the transmitter will continue to function with the last model/program opened. This method has been used in industrial machineries for many years where software crashes can cause deadly results.

Ok then but still if they fixed the comp. crashing problem it is still a lot of money and for what i want a TX that works not one that e-mails my friends or can play games or get on the internet so why do you want it unless your a comp. nerd.(just get a nice TX and a labtop)

What comp crashing problem? There is a possibility of a crash when you start tinkering with models manually in the CF card. One big thing is when you turn off the TX and then turn it back on without waiting for it to completely shut down. Or letting the battery die down to utter uselessness.

Quote
There have been a few instances where this has happened, but it's due mainly to operator problems when the user turns off the transmitter. Remember to allow it to shut completely down before turning it back on, or it will lose the programming that has been implemented. It's basically like a typical computer, and needs to go through the "SAVE" mode at shutdown

No doubt..cool radio, but since its based on Windows CE its guaranteed to have problems....I'm sure you will have to connect to MSN and download patches and updates on a daily basis. Does it allow you to reboot during a flight or do you get the famous message on your screen "Windows has encountered a critcal issue and will shut down in 5-4-3-2-1..OH SH*T.
Now if it was Linux based I would buy it..I'm not biased:-)

I've got over 400 flights on two G3 RXs with my 14MZ in a mixture of giant scale (100cc and 150cc) planes, carbon fiber/kevlar gliders and helis. Every flight has been rock solid since day one.

why is everyone excited the thing works as well and as "reliably?" as cheaper radios and yet pay 2000.00 bucks and have to stick up for their purchase? What does this "thing" do better than ALL other radios? Or is it just TX BLING? I'm sure it has no more transmitting power than all the rest and the RX must be the same as other PCM RX's etc by law. I am not trying to insult the owners. 400 flights ,,fine ,,many others have done that on cheap radios.
More mixes? More points? More Videos? What?
Thanks

This is a PM I got when concidering the 14MZ - I will not say who send it and if this does not answer you or convince you - well.... just do not buy one!!

i'm pm'ing you because the thread has already turned into a pissing contest instead of answering your question. I currently fly a Stylus and a 14mz. The stylus is league's beyond futaba and JR in the response time. Meaning reading the stick inputs, encoding the inputs, transmitting, and then decoding. Its also running the the reciever signal bus at 78hz instead of 50hz. This means the servo is forced to work more times a second but its also getting an extra 25 commands per-second meaning it can more accurately follow the commands from the tx. The only radio that has come close to the stylus in speed is the 14mz. JKos charts can prove that the Stylus is still slightly faster in the transmiting phase. Percieved control response comes from one other major factor. How often does the radio scan the stick inputs. I know the airtronics system is 200us. I know that the Futaba radios was 35ms (this was found out with work my boss did with NASA) JR was somewhere in the 20ms range. The 14mz feels faster and more accurate responding than the Stylus because it will scan the stick inputs more often than the Stylus (I don't know the number this time). What this means is that every time a signal is sent to the rx it will be sending the most recent stick command you place. This is the case because we don't fly a continous real time stream. We fly using a system that takes a snap shot of the controls and sends them to the rx every 14ms. You might ask if the radio only transmits every 14ms then why does it matter if the radio can read you inputs every 200us or 35ms? We fly helicopters as if we are in control every micro second, in reality we are only flying it every time the radio transmits and the rx recieves. So if the radio reads the sticks every 35ms that means the tx will send the same command in for 2 frames since it hasn't had time to read the sticks again. The stylus and 14mz will read the sticks at least 70 times before sending the frame to the rx. Basically it means the radio will send the command that it read only .0002 of a second prior to transmition. To our non-precise thumbs this will be closer to real time. This is also a reason it has taken fly-by-wire control to be implemented in aircraft. Mainly because the systems they had in the past were not fast enough to fly the aircraft faster than hydralic pumps. You will note that i didn't mention anything about the resolution difference between the 2 systems. Thats because i'm not sure i can distinguish the difference in feel of speed versus resolution. I'll also tell you that i am a contest pilot not a 3d pilot. My demands on response time will usually be different and more demanding than you average 3d pilot as i'm trying to keep the helicopter's main shaft in a 3 inch circle in 25-30mph winds. Unfortunately they don't tend to cancel contest for winds unless its over 40. The helicopter may not show all the inputs i'm placing but i can tell you there is about 20-25 per second. I've instrumented this as well as i am working on a UAV project that requires this information. My boss is upwards of about 35-40 corrections per-second. The helicopter doens't look like it because they are very miniscule inputs which only affect the disk and not the body. Thats if we are placing the inputs early enough. If we are behind on placing the inputs you can see them because they will be quite a bit larger. The last thing that i want to say is that the people who say that the 14mz doesn't do much more than a 9303, 8310, 9c super, 10x or 9z . Don't use enough of the features in the radio to really justify using a 14mz to fly better. The biggest thing that you will feel is that the helicopter will respond sooner with smaller more frequent inputs. The 14mz was truely designed with the high end F3C pilot in mind. My Stylus radio has 27 free programable mixes available to use. I have used them all for specific issues in certain maneuvers. The 14mx has most of the mixes that i use built in and then it has more availble free mixes. Also it has mixes that i never dreamed of having till i got them in the radio. Like acceleration mix for throttle. This mix lets the throttle overshoot the inputed point by a certain amount then returns to the desired position.

It may come across that way, but mostly what is being done is addressing those people that ask about its reliability. A very small number had problems in a few very particular situations. But due to the power of the Net, these became thought of as the majority, rather than the minority. Hence the reason why some many of us happy 14MZ owners mention how well it works.

As far as what it does better. It is simply the most powerful, easy to program radio I have seen in 40 years of playing around in this hobby. Do most people need one? Absolutely not. But, if you have an application that will be made easier (giant scale aerobatics, scale, competitive gliders, AND helis) then this radio is hard to beat. It also appeals to those that want the latest, greatest technology regardless of their needs.
