1) Bolt both blades to the Koll to find the heaviest blade. Make it the
Master and mark it as such.
2) Remove the blades and mount the master across the unit and set the bubble to level. Remove the master and install the "slave" in exactly the same place (you did lock down the thumb wheel didn't you?).
3) Add electricians tape, small brads or bubble gum (just kidding) to the light end in order to make the bubble level again. This is correcting the "spanwise balance".
4) Hold the blade in the unit, pick up the works and turn it over. Place a dot of ink in the center of the diecut circle. This will mark the blade's spanwise C of G for later.
5) Bolt both blades to the unit as you did in step #1 and add weight to the lighter blade until they balance perfectly. Add the weight to the same spot you marked at the blades C of G. That way it won't throw off all your hard work.
6) OPTIONAL: Mount the bolts of the appropriate size to the unit (3mm for 30 size blades and 4mm for 60 size blades) and place the Master perpindicular resting against the bolts. This will show the blade's CHORDWISE C of G. Once the bubble is levelled, carefully remove the Master and slide in the Slave. You'll probably find your chordwise
C of G is out. Get over it! There's very little you can do here unless your building a set of wood blades from scratch.
You're Done!
I've found that matching the overall balance of the blades is good to 1/10th of a gram. I then take the blades to work where I have access to a 1/100th of a gram scale and really zero them in.
The Koll is great for humbling some C/F blade manufacturers. Not all blades are created equal in the matching department. I've had some dogs that were 4 grams out and only two sets of perfect blades from the factory (a set of 30 size NHP's and a set of 680 V-blades). All others have fallen short somewhere, usually the chordwise C of G.
I hope this helps. If you need any further info email Mr. Koll himself.
He is a great guy and has forgotten more about these heli things than most of us will ever know.
