You need something typically... you can go with a Vario multiblade gyro or you can try two peizo gyros on aileron and elevator, depending on yor swashplate type.

I have seen a Vario SkyFox run a 4 blade head on both twin gyros and a single Vario MB unit. When setup correctly both seem to work well.

Multi Blade Gyro

The Vario Rep in Canada has a good article & setup info on his website. Check it out.

re multi blade gyro

As I understand it when you fly with a flybar type head when you put the heli into forward flight you would give a little input from your radio the heli moves in that direction untill an oppossing input is given. With a multi blade head or fly barless head you have to continue to give forward input to continue forward . The gyro controls the swashlpate servos to make the heli respond like a flybar equiped head.
I hope this helps.

head gyro

I have a 4 blade machine, and I have flown it around. I do not have the Multi-Blade gyro and it is no problem. Yes the head requires more attention in flight, but it is very managable. If you can do 3D you should have no problem with a 4 blade head.

I don't believe you need it.

This is an old post I did about the multi heads and gyros. I hope this helps you.

Multi Heads

The purpose of the gyro is to stop the pitch up tendency and stablize your inputs but the head doesn't have much tendency to pitch up anyway. What I mean by stablize the input is for the machine to continue to track as you center the cyclic controls as a flybar machine does. A multi head will usually level out as you center the cyclic, the gyro helps stop that tendency and track (fly) like a flybar head.
The Dave is also correct you don't need the gyro to fly the new Vario multi heads. They fly fine without them. The old pitch up thing is a thing of the past with the old heads. I have a few of them and they fly great. I also use the multi gyros but with the gain off at zero. I do this because I have a JR 10x and it can't do 90 degree CCPM set-ups. The gyro has this program in it. I also use it for the timing (swashplate rotation). The auto rotation capabilities are awesome also. I can auto in from a 7 foot hover with 1500mm blades, the 1600mm are even better.
I have also flew these heads with just two opposing blades.
Set up like a two blade head istead of a 4 blade head. It flies just as well. The only thing you will notice is if you take off two blades the head speed will increase without the extra drag.
I hope this answers some questions for you.
