Well I finally got the Eolo done with the Lehner 1930-6 motor. I added a heat sink not knowing how hot it would get.

Running a 19T pinion is giving me approx 2000 headspeed when loaded with governor mode at 80%

This one has the belt drive too. Expecting to use it as a camera platform eventually, carrying one of those ExSlim or Optio cameras.




Got the R22 canopy in a trade, so I thought I would try it out. Looks kinda cute so why not. Moved it forward and down to fit, no interference with the swashplate as found in the stock setup.

I did grind the single piece heat sink so that it would not hit the battery holder. I did not have a mill, so I used a belt sander which did a really clean job. The heat sink in intended for the Hacker B50

Headspeed was up around 2400 on the ground in governor mode at 80%, flew like a banshee.

Landed and the TP4200 brick pack was puffed. Bummer. Hopefully TP will replace it.

I think I will go to a smaller pinion. Running the setup on the KC spreadsheet did not show extraordinary amps, not even up to the rating of the pack which had only 12 cycles.

Any comments are appreciated.

With Hacker C40-9L motor and 19t pinion I got 2400 rpm and 10 min fligh times. At the end of the flight TP 3s2p pack is puffed. The puffing goes away after charging. I am contemplating to change the pack, haven't contacted TP yet. But the pack behaves fine under slightly milder discharge - running 17t pinion and 1900 rpm head speed.

Are you sure about charging a puffed pack? Seem very dangerous to me

I found that big motors are less efficient at low load. Have you looked at the esc's temp? Better run a big motor like this at 100% throtlle, partial load with a very low impedance motor could short the lipo. The average amp value may look normal but the instantanious current maybe very high...

Actually the puffiness went down significantly, but I sent it to TP just the same.

I think I will drill out a bunch of pinions and try a higher governor mode and a smaller pinion, trying to end up at a unloaded speed of 2100. I don't need that much crazy power.

charging a puffed pack

I was very careful at the first charge with the puffed pack. But the pufiness went away and the pack continue to fly normally thereafter, albeit with lower discharge rate.

OK, I drilled out the 16, 17 and 18T pinion to 4mm. Trying the 17T first.

Did the calculations and with this motor at unloaded condition, gives the following RPM's. Hopefully the load won't puff another pack. I am even thinking up going up to 3S3P pack for this bird.


T / GR Headspeed
16T/17.6 = 2197 rpm
17T/16.6 = 2329 rpm
18T/15.6 = 2478 rpm

I got to these numbers by taking the motor KV of 3483, multiplying by the nominal pack voltage, then dividing by the gear ratio. Is that right?

Use K.C sheet so it calculate the voltage loss in wire, ESC, motor and battery, the real HS should be lower.

My guess is that resistance of 3s3p batteries plus motor plus controller is around 0.060 ohm. 30A load @high pitch angles will lower the effective voltage by 1.8V give or take. So you can expect 15-20% lower head speed on the main rotor during aerobatics.

Ok, I don't want to worry about this any more so I just ordered a new 3S3P pack with balancer and all. This will give me 50% more available current so I should be able to really crank it up.

This machine will be carrying a camera system before too long, and puffing packs is enough to make me tweak.

It's been a while.
I had a 3s2p go "puffy" on me flying the Lehner. Battery does get a bit hot. I decided to take the battery apart. I found it was not puffed, but defomed by the shape of the Eolo battery carrier. The hot battery is soft enough to become slightly crowned, which pulls the top and middle cells away from each other down the center, while they stay cemented along the edges. This gives the pack a ballooned shape. In reality there was nothing actually wrong with it, but I unfortunatly toar a tab off during the postmortem. I don't seem to have the skill to solder a new one. I now include a CF plate on top of the battery when I install it so that it presses against something flat. Of course the newer Eolos have a different holder (so I hear).

Been going to the field more often lately Greg but wont be there for the next two weekends.

Well, I changed from 19T to 17T. At 80% throttle headspeed is at 2400rpm so I think I will go down to 16 or 15T. Don't want to puff another pack. For whatever reason, I thought 19 was the way to go, but now it is clear that it is not. I want to run the governor mode on the Kontronic 55 at 95%.

The pack that puffed may actually be just fine, while packing it up, I noticed the swelling went way down. I am using the front "brick" mount on mine so I dont think it was mount-tweak. I did go ahead and order a 3S3P thinking it will handle more amps for this setup.

Camera is pending for the AP rig, probably a second hand S4i or S5i. If that does not come through then I will get a new S6. Will be using the digi-live downlink and not sure which trigger yet.

Final decision is whether to build the carrier to be tilt only or pan and tilt.

I ran the 1930 on a 3s2p and a 14, 15 and 17tooth if memory serves.
I liked the 15 the best I think it ran about 2400 at 90%. The temps were ok not real hot at all. I think the low gear ratio is alot less stress on the motor and batt. It was a hot setup, the only reason I like the avox better is the weight. The avox is a little hotter but I haven't had problems out of it yet. I am running it on 6s and a 14 tooth getting about 2500 out of it.
The 1920 is a good setup for a intermediate pilot lighter than the 1930 and stronger than the hacker setup.
You will like the 1930 over all a great setup.

Ok, I changed it to 15T

Test tomorrow.

If anyone wants a large pinion for running on the alternate wiring configuration, I have a bunch of them. I also have the sleeve material too if you want to sleeve down an existing 5mm pinion.

15 T was too small (slow), now running 16T with excellent results. No problems with 3S2P prolite brick pack on my CamEolo. Haven't measured the speed, but I estimate it at about 2100 in hover and this is at 95% governor mode on Kontronic 55-6-18
