Tools and Field Equipment > Airplane optical tach?

Can an airplane optical tach be used to find the rotor speed? You would have to get close but it is already in the drawer and would save a bundle if usable.

Thanks Scott S.

Back in the "dark ages" I used to use one, reading the TR and converting for gear ratio was easy but without "flight" loads it's only a "guide".

I figured I would use the Rays manual idea on the hold down for the tracking and needle setting and see if I get the rotor RPM close so I know what to listen for at around 1800 rpm. I feel that the listening won't be a problem as I can here a 200 rpm diference in my sled at 8800, and that is in the wind under a helmet. I just wasn't sure if it would read that low. Thanks Scott S.

There is the TTR-2000 optical Tachometer that's attached to the tailboom made by Taya and distributed by thunder tiger.

Airplane Tach

Yes you should be able to use an airplane tach. I have a cheapo airplane tach which has a readout about 3/4 " tall. I haven't used one of the helicopter specific tachs, but my guess is that they are more accurate. My airplane tach reads rpm only in 100 rpm increments so you can't see the 50's in between. Works for me. YMMV
