| hello all.
been in vegas all week. but, i got back to a desk full of parts from rcracer and spent the evening installing everything and taking notes.
everyone who wants a belt drive for the 3dpro should be VERY excited. i havent spun the thing up yet. but, installation is very clean and simple.
as far as the front end goes, the 48T pulley gear he sent me was pre-modded to fit right on the stock shaft and accept the shaft pin to lock it in place. the boom mount mated right up to the center, recessed section of the purple anodized top plate to keep it from twisting. in the prototype i needed to tap a thread or two of the 2mm screw holes, then the 2mm screws finished tapping themselves as they are driven in. i believe rcracer will address this issue by pretapping the first thread on the production model (tapping the entire hole 2mm provides a loose fit for the screw..it really needs to self tap)
there is no boom 'lock' as the stock version has to keep the boom from twisting in the mount. but, he did pre-drill and tap the setscrew holes. and, the appear to be holding very well.
on the back, the CNC tailbox and 10T alum. pulley went together super simply. the shaft bearings from the stock tailbox are re-used and pressed right into his setup. the 4 capscrews that secure the tailbox to the boom provide a very tight grip that can be moved only with great force. how that will work in flight will be seen tomorrow. but, it appears quite sufficient.
using a 388t belt, i had to adjust the boom in the front boom mount to get the tension right. i had to move the boom aft about 1/8" from its completely seated position. but, as i said above, the setscrews seem to be holding it well. i think once the 388t belt is confirmed to be the right belt for this setup, rcracer will adjust the depth of the boom mount accordingly.
as a side note, the skid mounts he has done are very nice. they went on in about 5 minutes. i will test them tomorrow. but, if they hold up to some rough landings in the street, i'll be giving them my o.k.
oh, last thing. i forgot to measure how much this mod extended the boom from stock. but, i held up my SAB 280s and they look like they'll fit now. i tried them on the stock version with my fingers crossed. but, they were too long.
pictures and hopefully video tomorrow.
if it ain't broke…break it. |
