Waking up to fly at dawn was never more satisfying! I have a 3mm Curtek Micro Lighting kit here that I had been meaning to test before use in a scale heli body.

So I decided to put it on the Esky/Blade. It took about 10 minutes to mount this. The legs of the wide angle RED tail LED are straddling the DD tail fin, and the wide angle WHITE front LED is through the windshield. Both are held with a dot of hot glue. The wires are held to the boom with clear tape. The system is plugged into CH5 on the 4-in-1. This means you can activate the landing lights with a switch on your aftermarket Tx. I have not mounted the Nav lights.

Here is a direct link to the 3mm kit - it is hard to find on their site:

The control module is 5.5 grams, and each 3mm LED with wire is 1.6 grams. I merely placed the PCB in between the battery and Rx tray. It is held by friction and the rubber band. It is very bright at dawn - I will test later today at different hours. This is not the cheapest system, but a lot of satisfied people use Curtek.

I'm using the double flash strobe sequence. Here's pics:

Very cool.

I'm dying to see some pics of the lights in action.

I've been thinking about puting nav lights and maybe some headlights on my Blade as most of the flying I get to do is after work and usually it's dark out or getting dark...

While I really like the idea of the TX on/off for the lighting, $50 is a bit pricey for me when a $2 toggle switch works (albeit manual). Looking for custom hook ups for lighting I had not found much, had you?

If I can't find a do-it-yourself or something a little cheaper I may go the same route. How are you handling the power for the lights?

You can see movies of the lights on helis at the Curtek website. It is powered by the 4-in-1 unit. It does not affect flight time at all - it uses very, very little power. This is a very complete set with 28" wires for the lights, and the wires are very very small, but durable. It came with more lights than needed for a simple micro heli. It also has modes for landing lights, solid nav lights, as well as the strobing anti collision lights. You would really only want one or the other. Maybe they will consider a cheaper two light set with just anti colision strobes for small helis. We should email them.

You could further lighten the LED controller by using a lighter wire harness to the Rx, and also by removing (desoldering) the pin header for the LEDs, and soldering your LED wires directly. Also shortening the LED wires to length will make them less than 1.6 grams each, and removing the connector if you solder direct will further lighten them.

They are visible in daylight from 3-6 feet - but not really in flight. However at dawn or dusk - they are very bright even 150+ feet away.

It is a very cool effect, and the neighbors are watching the heli again after having become very jaded by hundreds of heli flights.

I have a set of Thanh Tran's LiPo alarm lights/strobes on my BCP. They look awesome as well. You might consider running the wires along the bottom of your boom though. If you ever have a boom strike, you'll cut the wires if they're along the top of the boom like your pics have.

Don't ask me how I know... javascript:smilie('')
