e-Ikarus Piccolo-Eco 8/16 > Has the Eco 8 lost its appeal?

Are the Vipers the new deal now so no one wants an Eco? I have tried to sell mine in parts or RTF and I dont get much interest unless it the lowest of low balls. I but one on Ebay with many extras RTF, brushless, Carbons and 3x 10 cell packs and 355 was the highest bid. My reserve was $450 and I thought that was a good deal since what was includes would retail for more than $800

What's up with that? This site doesnt get much visits in the eco section either. A thread I started weeks ago is still on the first page. On RCG thread go in for ever about the eco...

Recently, there was a current resurgence of interest in the Eco as manifested by an increase in the frequency of posts. The Viper is a bit smaller and is not a good comparison at face value. I have not seen one fly yet, but with large number of new micro ehelis things are getting diluted fast. The Eco has been out for something like 7 years now and is not the latest thing. I still fly mine a lot. Its been good to me. Lots of interest on rc-groups and the other "spot" where people congregate.

When the appeal of the "dinosaur named" heli fades (look at how many are selling in the classifieds) I think they will be back. The eco is a proven design that is simple and flies great with minimal upgrades. When I come back to heli's (the rex left a bad taste in my mouth!) I will buy another 8. I had a great time with mine and I miss her. Don't sweat the post count here. Almost every post here is informational. Lets take questions / comments as they come and answer them as best as we can. I had so much sucess with mine (until I crashed ) I still try to help out those who need it. Bill

I LOVE MINE. I fly them alot. They are bigger than the Viper and Rex and give anyone coming into this hobby a great start for not a great outlay. I have a Logo 14 and a Joker CX but still use the ecos. Great for backyard flying but I can still fly when the breeze is blowing unlike loads of the other helis. 9 3300gp cells gives me good performance with 12 minute flights. the radio gear is all GWS cheap stuff with the Ikarus PG-03 gyro. Nothing special but gives me no problems. I agree that it is not the best 3D machine but for the beginner to electrics it is superb. Works for me!!!!!!

I dont think so but thats perhaps because i have one. The only gripe I have with mine is that its a bottomless pit to upgrade and costs a fortune.

Hello,
I'm new to RunRyder, but this discussion caught my eye! I am a newbie, and love my Eco8. I've seen on one of the other forum sights that someone said the Eco8 is outdated. I just say that it's tried and true! Upgrades and parts seem to be expensive though. That said, I hovered sucessfully on my first attempt, even though the transmitter wasn't set up correctly! The Eco8 has a 90 degree swash, my transmitter does not, and I didn't know how to set it up at the time....the bird flew anyway! I'm using brushless with 3cell lipo's, AUW is about 2.5 pounds!

Yes, it does

I guess it lost its appeal a couple years ago ...

However I am still using that for training, Eco8 is definitively not a good machine - out of the box it is for hovering or figure of eight only and any attempts to push it towards the aerobatics means heavy investments with not very convincing results. I am flying Eco8 six years now, the machine could do a lot of tricks, but it far from its origin.

You can love it, but let's be open, Eco8 in the form how it is handled by Ikarus is simply dead and hardly find out new users ...

Best Regards

I agree with Zapa

I think there are quite a few people out there that still like this heli. In
fact, I haven't really ever heard of anybody who dislikes it.
I happen to like mine very much, but in my opinion, Ikarus has fallen behind the times on this heli. So before I consider fixing and tweeking my Eco, I tend to go onto one of my other helis until I see a great deal on whatever parts I may need.

Thanks

I agree that it has fallen behind the times etc but theres still plenty of people flying them.

my big gripe with the eco8 is that i had a £400 startup deal from there with all of the upgrading etc i have done it now stands me £900 come on i could get me a lot more useable IC setup for that (infact less than) its a bottomless pit theres always something you need to upgrade and when you do it something else then needs to be sorted.

another thing is that there damd expensive to repair and so basic out of the box

come on its at least time they get sold with hardened shafts and reasonably solid chasis

The eco suits my needs pretty well - I like the size & light weight, and it can use relatively cheap brushless power setups compared to others of similiar size. I'm not a 3d flyer & never will be, that would change the picture a bit.

It should definitely come with hardened shafts, but I'm still running the original set in mine - the only upgraded airframe parts I'm using are the semi-symmetrical fiberglass blades & the autorotation hub (which it should also come with IMO). I purposely didn't buy a package deal as I knew brushless power was the only way to go for me.

No fancy aluminum parts on mine, I'll only add that stuff if it's a crash replacement & I haven't broken anything yet

If you look at the Eco activity on RCgroups the Eco is enjoying a bit of a revival.

I know what you mean brett however i expected something a little more than a hover and a flutter about when i bought it i should of done more homework on it.

i suppose i expected something that would take me into at least reasonable forward flight (not fff though) but as soon as i got into it that was when it faltered and kept faltering.

it now stands me more money than I ever thought it would do and im about to go brushless so thats gonna bumph it up yet further but once i have gone brushless that will be the lot.

time to put the money into something new.

Having said all that though i wouldnt sell it no matter what i have always loved to fly it and now far more than ever.

Bluntly, the Trex has become THE hot new mini platform for heli's. Its got several incarnations to where it has the bugs worked out of it, its actually fun and easy to build and work on it, it has a few different flavors, all priced right, spares are readily available and priced right. Most of all, its a hardy little beast that can either be set-up for mild flying or can be bling-bling'ed to blow away a nitro Raptor (seen those Neu motor and 4s videos?). Sunday flyer to competition level guys all find a set-up with the Trex. That's why its taking over.

I have one on the shelf, BUT...

for me, I've always liked the Hornets. I'm finding them used in good condition for dirt cheap. Usually I can get a heli with some electronics, sell off the electronics (or use the electronics), if I figure out my purchase price, the heli itself is pretty close to "free" in the deal. There's no market for them. A year or two ago, people were pouring time and money into them, now, they want to sell these cool little micros and all go buy Trex's. Did all the Hornets currently flying all of a sudden pass their expiration date? NO. Still a GREAT little machine for those who take the time to learn it and learn how to fly it. It will fly in smaller fields, and have just as much punch and 3d capability as something far heavier and more costly. Plus, I know some places to get real reasonable parts (the parts cost killed a LOT of the enthusiasm for the heli), plus how to make mods to make it fly well and avoid many of the common misshaps.

What does this have to do with the Eco? Well, if you like a heli, and it falls out of favor, that's the time to look to pick up parts/spares/other additions to the heli at bargain deals, NOT sell out of it. You've got a proven heli, like what it does, STICK WITH IT. Who cares what everyone else is flying?

I love my ECO and although its suffered a few bumps here and there - most lately from about 40 feet up in fff (flat out in fact) - its been repaired and upgraded as evolution intended.

Although Ikarus seem to sell the most basic of setups I'm not sure the ECO in its stock form was ever intended to compete with the IC helis of its day. A few crashes here and there and various essential upgrades such as the metal swash plate and, of course, pilot discipline not to mention the obligligtory patience setting it up mean the ECO will peform as well as an any IC heli.

However, I agree with the previous posts that it is expensive and challanging to get the ECO flying great but when it does it is certainly the most rewarding heli in my collection................I just hope it doesn't decide to fall from the sky again too soon!

Oh right - just bought an Eco 8 to build. Been flying my Rappy and others for a while but liked my little Eolo so much in the backyard that I wanted a bigger electric so I could just go out with the bird and the Tx and leave all the glow stuff at home. Some of you love it and some of you don't.

I just hope the eco8 royal comes with a bit more than a stiffer chassis, 120 degree swash and different tail blades as its advertised i sincerly hope that it atleast comes with hardened shafts as stock and stock thrust bearings would be sooo much wanted surly these should be added to cope with the additional headspeed most of us run.

as we all know the eco is what you make it at the moment to keep up with the other models it desperatly needs to be brought into the 21st century

Why hasn't the Eco been upgraded every year or so..... or has it? Some of the design makes me think no one has looked at it for years!
BTW, for anyone interested, I never got the slightest reply to my emails from HeliHobby but fxaeromodels were as good as gold.
