Hi group,

I have made a camera mount for the spirit that I will try out this weekend if weather allows it:

The heli mount weighs about 120 grams, and the camera weighs about 210 - that makes an auw of 1660.
How do you guys think it will fly with this extra weight?

Looks cool

I am planning the same thing, debating whether to have a separate LG just for it as opposed to doing what you did

That is a heavy camera. Check out the Pentax or (I hear is better) the Casio Exslim. I am trying to figure out which can use an IR trigger and how to set that up. This would save you half of the camera weight.

Thanks Stet,

Yeah the camera is heavy... I will get a lighter one if this works out. I have been peeking around in the AP forum and it seems that Pentax Optio 5 is a good camera - it weighs 120 grams, have ir port that so that it can be triggered with a gentled, and I think it will work with the black widdow downlink.

I thought about making a landing gear too, but it seemed easier to bring the mount along with me when I go flying and just strap it on when I need it. This was easy to make too with the rectangular shape - all you need is cf rods, cf strains and lots of epoxy. It took a while though, letting the epoxy dry before going to the next step...

It will be fun to see if it works... may be it will shake it self apart when it gets in the air
Weather does not look good at the moment but I will post when I have tried it

I think the idea is a really good one, and the new small cameras take excellent pics. I hear the Casio is basically the same camera (same lens) but has a better chip and costs less. These cameras keep changing and going to higher and higher res, so the 3 or 4 mpx should be available at a discount.

With one of these you should be able to sneak shots that would otherwise be impossible due to the noise, size and hazard of regular AP rigs. If I get mine working like I want, I hope to do local photography for real estate stuff.

If you have weight problems, just fool around with your pinion selection. A guy here is carrying 5 lbs total weight flying these converted toy scale jobs. He is running 3S2P and a Kontronic twist 37, getting 5 or 6 minute hovering flights.

In order to prevent shaking, decouple the landing gear from the camera carrier, meaning put a soft foam interface between them and don't tie it tight.

If askman can lift a camera with his trex, then it should be no problem using the spirit. I started out with electrics flying a concept ep with brushed motor, 10S nicads and jet ranger fuse - this should be a rocket compared to that Dont think it will auto well though...

Good idea using foam and let the carrier hang under the heli - I'll do that.

I was thinking of setting it up so that it runs at 100% throtle - hovering at mid stick in all flight modes. Then I'll use the flight modes to run different expos to get a softer feel when hovering.

Yeah, if the pictures are OK it should be a marked for this - So far I am just doing it for the fun of it ... well I should not get too carried away until I have tried it out...

That is probably a good idea Tom.
Collective range is about -/+ 10 degrees now... -6 + 14 would be better.

I guess I'll make me another set of mixing rods that makes it easier to switch back and forth between -+10 to -6 +14... Just to bad that the Spirit links are such a pain in the a$$ to take off

Well, finally I got the time to test it out - and it worked

I didnt manage to get out until after sunset, so the pictures isnt that great:

It was no problem flying with the extra weight, if a lighter camera is used it will be a breeze to fly. It was a bit shaky in vertical descends though. No vibrations in the mount (thanks Stet). The hardest bit was to get the remote clicker working properly...

Now I have to read the camera manual to see what settings I need to set to get sharper images...

Lock the focus on infinity

That is why the micro Canon cameras won't work, you can't manually lock the focus.

I'll try that, thanks.

Hopefully I will get to try it out in the daylight tomorrow
