has any one out there tried to fly a helli without a gyro?

when I first learnt to hover with a schluter helliboy about 12 to 15 years ago, I never had a gyro or revo mixing on my radio. I am sure that your current hellis could be setup without a gyro, just to make life intresting.

Gyro - What's A Gyro

Yawl done went and invented something new and did not tell me.

Me to - Old Timer - Learned before gyros or chopper radios - Was proud the day I could hold the tail somewhere in 90 degrees of where wanted.

Can't stand for anymore interesting a life with choppers that already have.

I started in the 70's and flew for about 5 years without any gyro ("men" didn't use them) Then I got back into it about two years ago with a Concept 60 and flew again without a gyro and had no real problems except for sloppy flying and needing to pay attention to the wind. Due to the urging of others (thanks SENECA) I got a 401/9253 and it makes it a lot less work but within my meager abilities I had no problems.

I was a the field and Alan Szabo was flying his heli without the gyro. I was so surprised becouse I could not tell he did not have it on.
He said he wanted to know what the differece was with the gyro and without.

I flew that helli with a four channel sataba ( Futaba in the rest of the world) am set on 27mhz flying hellis to day is easy. at that stage of my life I could not even afford the helli. I bought it second hand for about $20.00

I never even crashed it.

I got a "Freddie Futaba" patch with my first Futaba radio.

Anyone else remember him?

My first chopper just had throttle control with an escapement.
Spark generator for trans.

Could control altitude and catch the wind moving in different directions sort of like a hot air balloon does to get where it wants to go.

And could bring it down before it drifted out of sight.

One day the escapement ran out of turns on the rubber band and chopper was never seen again or I would fly it again to just show yawl.

Or...How about the time I trained an onboard mouse to work the controls by whistle signals from me on the ground.

Yes in 1979 with a Heliboy. Not fun, the mechanical gyro had recently just come out from Kraft and after fighting for a few weeks I put the $50.00 gyro in and was hovering immediately. I did have the Apoloo 7 series Heli transmitter though. Still works but its just a colectors item now. Not the narrow band type.

still cant find any lab rat dumb enough to fly with me yet.
still cant wistle loud enough.

though I still own two MFA hellis and enough spares to keep em going for about ten years..

when I fly them every one at the club stands well back & waits for them to self destuct.

the only reason I still fly them is to piss off raptor drivers. those damm raptors fly themselves. the pilot is only there to crash em!

if you can fly a MFA you can fly anything. and this is at high altitude 5500ft you measure control input reaction time with a calander

Yeah...And my mouse was trained to go to certain leg positions if no whistles heard for ten seconds as a failsafe function.

Got to stop hitting the J&B so early in day.

For real, my first gyro was a Kavan unit (about mid seventies I think) that you had to direct wire to pot in rudder/yaw servo.
Worked (NOT) so well that I swore off them for years.

I remember the thing about "Real Men" don't need no stinking gyro.
Till you finally got a taste of one and never wanted to turn back.

I remember test flying someones chopper and wondered out loud what he had done to make the tail fly so good.
He said in a whisper, "Gyro".
I got one, but kept it sort of hid under the canopy as I did not want my buds to know that I had gone over to the sissie dark side.

Gyro?????

No Gyro on my Dubro Shark.

No Gyro on my Heli-Baby with Webra Speed 61. No torque problems. Ha! Ha!

No Gyro on my Kavan Jet Ranger.

No Gyro on my Schluter Heli-Boy.

No computer radios with mixing etc.

Those were really fun days when everyone was striving to improve our sport. Many thanks to the people who stuck with it to advance the sport to where it is today.

And by the way, I don't want to go back to my Kraft radio with homemade cams on the servo output arms to mix the throttle and collective.

Boy we have come a long way. I can't wait to see what is next.

From time to time I think of guys like Bill Youmans, Walt Schoonard and Cliff Bennett and others that did alot to jump start this sport and propel it to where it is today.

NO GYROS???

You guys are funny.

When I first started flying heli's about a year ago, I had my gyro set so low of sensitivity that I just as well have not had one at all. In fact I couldn't really figure out what it did until I got a little better understanding of the whole concept and how to properly set up the heli.
I tought myself with very minimal damage but if I'd known then what I known now it wouldn't have been so intimidating.

When I read these post, I wonder to myself what will change in the next 20 or so years that fliers then will look back at and wonder how we did with out.

Been there done that on a Baron 28 why you ask? Because I didnt know any better back then, it was a tiger by the tail the whole time. But if I loose the gyro now I know to be REAL gentle W the throttle/cyclic and hit throttle hold.
