I am putting back together a Schulter Miniboy (early 80's vintage). Do you think that today's OS32SX-H would perform as well as an airplane OS40-FP of yesteryear for which the Miniboy was designed for?

Also am I going to have gearing problems?

Don't much think so. I had one as my first chopper and ran an
O.S. 46. It's a metal frame "HEAVY" chopper and you need a big
engine.

Tongue,

I agree with Linus. I too learned to fly with a Miniboy using an OS 40 airplane engine. Though it would fly around, power was marginal due to weight and short blades. I would think a 50 size engine would be very adequate.

OS 32SX??

I'm not sure you guys are giving the OS 32SX enough credit...I think it will be fine. I don't think an 80's aircraft engine can really be compared to a 2002 HELI engine!! Times have changed and so has engine technology, power/weight is much better than it would have been back then.............

I'm with Blade on this one...my Miniboy had an K&B 40 plank engine in it and I flew it around quite a bit...I KNOW the OS .32 SXH has more go-up-and-go than that ol' K&B did! The problem might be more of what engine will fit...the Miniboy was produced before the engine manufactures started to try to "standardize" mounting dimensions. Also, the gearing might be difficult to match to a new engine...the old loop scavanged porting of the '70's and '80's had the engines turning slower than the Schnerle porting of today! If you get it into the air I hope you post some pics, I learned a lot from the Miniboy/Heliboy series of choppers...mostly curse words in four languages ( most fluent in German )! Good luck!

Blade shortening

Blade you are thinking along the same lines as I was. I am very worried about the gearing, more so than the power because of the engine technology progress.

I am figuring though that the shorter blades will allow the engine to turn faster in order to reach the target 300MPH target linear speed for the blade tips. If the engine is turning too fast I will just further shorten the blades...

Am I making sense?

Blades?

Well, I don't know that much about these things, but, couldn't you just increase your pitch curve if you want to load up the engine more? I think I see Doug lurking out there, he probably has several of EACH of these helis in his "stash" he will be able to answer most if not all of your ?'s about these helis........
Don't be shy Doug..come on down!!!.....

Mini Boy

I flew several of the Heli Baby's in the ole days. My favorite was equipped with a Webra Speed 61. This was a real powerhouse..Talk about torque. When you gave it full throttle and full tail control to stop the tail torque it still went forward with the tail sideways.

I still believe I was the "first one or one of the first ones" to loop a fixed pitch helicopter. I demonstated this maneuver during a fun Fly in Atlanta, Georgia.

I hope you have better luck with the flat belt tail drive than I did. Nothing worse than doing a 1440 tail spin and have the belt spit out the back of the tail boom.

Well, enough of the good ole days.

I think I would try a OS/50 in that machine and convert the trail drive to a cogged belt design something like the Raptor 30 etc. With a Gryo you would have a very nice flying machine from the ole days.

Send me a picture when you get it done. I would love to see it.

Gook Luck!!!!!!

What......Did someone say something about the 80's helies? I think that was "after" my time. My only comment the engines back then were set up the same as today (crossport engines went away in the 60's.The difference is the number and size of the porting and having a "tuned" crancase / crank shaft to broaden the power band and more aggressive timing ( using 30% in the early days was unheard of. I think the 80's engine running on 30% will perform pretty good. How heavy is the Miniboy? if around 7 LB it's heavy but not that much. Give it a break, it's just an old machine (I have older)

Put a TT 50 or OS 50 in it and just fly it. I think the gearing will be to tall for the OS 32

What do you have?

Durbro 300, Dubro Shark, Dubro Whirly Bird, or some of the ole Schluter Gazelle's etc.

Maybe we should start a museum?? All I have left is a bunch of ole Kavan Jet Ranger parts Wash-out's etc. The rest have gone to crash heaven.

Sure is nice flying heli's today with these great kits, radios and gyro's.

Maybe a Dubro 300 3D contest?

Just Kidding.

Dubro 300 hover duration contest the object is to see who can keep enough parts on it to continue flying I had a Shark in the early days but it was such a POS that I got a Helibaby to learn on and I still have that as well as a couple of Revolution 40's and 60's as well as some Kavan JR (that would be worth flying as a CCPM) and the greatest POS ever made the KAVAN Alouette (sp).

Hmmm....

Hey Doug. Got any Mantis parts??? I need some to get my antique flying...

I would put as close to the original engine in as possible. In fact I have a K&B 46 to put in mine. I think it adds to the heli's nostalgia much more. Besides we all know what kind of a heli god you are if you can keep one of those beast's under control!

Reminds me of my old MFA Hughes 500 full body chopper.. Never did get that dang thing off the ground. That fiberglass shell was powder blue in color, and ranged from 1/8th thick to 1/4" thick in spots. Now I see they still sell the Sport 500.. Guess they had to eliminate all the body work to get them off the ground. Dang this thread brings back memories Anyone else out there ever have a full body Hughes 500 from Hobby-Lobby years back?? Did it fly??

Old?

My first heli was the Scluter Heli~Baby, there is a pic of it in my gallery. I think I had an Enya 35 in it, it's a bit fuzzy, after all that was 27~28 yrs. ago and I can't remember where I was last wk!! I had a JI Joe for balance...he was the perfect weight.....I think he was about 7oz. He was definately a better pilot than I was back then, maybe even now.......

Shark

I had a Shark in the early days but it was such a POS..

Ouch Doug, those words cut deeply ;o) ...

I've still got the Shark I learned to fly with way back when...... It was designed very solidly (except for the plastic canopy) and, other than the ones I destroyed while attempting a modification, still has the original parts. The engine has never been disassembled and still runs fine. It is a fuel guzzler, so I have always ran it on no-nitro model airplane fuel. With no problems, I might add.

But enough about the "good old days" of am radios with no programmable functions, no gyros, fixed pitch, 2d heli flying..

Later;

I, too, learned to fly with a Dubro Shark--- but not with the O & R engine. Never could get the torque and control input lag coordinated. After I changed to a Webra Speed 61, I learned to hover. Learned foward flight with a Heli-Baby. When I got a Kavan Jet Ranger I learned to loop and roll. Also had a Schluter Heli-Boy that flew well.
Saw John Simoine loop a Revolution 40 fixed pitch in about '76 or '77. Only fixed pitch I ever saw loop. I think we were in Pennsylvania at a flyin hosted by Bill Curtis.

I owned a Mini-boy for many years. It flew very well with an OS Max 45 FSRH. It started out life with an HP Gold Cup 40 (which can still be had from MECOA). That was a surprisingly strong engine for its day, and it flew well at 5200 feet altitude. The OS 45 was a better match, however.
