Crashed? Discussion and Photos > Fury Fires, is it normal or unique?

Hi,

Man that is ugly

Starting to wonder how flamable g-10 is? Its a plastic composite and plastic burns fairly well. The minature liner holds up forever, even survives hot starts, maybe thats its down fall. It holds up long enough for the clutch to heat up from slipping to start a fire. Once the motor shuts off all the cooling air is gone so the g-10 goes up in flames.

Sounds like a really strange test procedure you did on the failsafe before the first flight, was there something that happened the crash before that made you do a test run with no blades and test the fail safe? Dont get me wrong, I check my failsafes but its on the bench with no motor running.

Think I'll take a couple hot dogs down to the field whenever I fly my fury

Yes, I have had two prior crashes where the heli gets light on the skids, and then no radio control at all - the heli tilts left (slightly) and then you know the rest. I check the fail safes on the bench also, but this will not check the proper operation of the GV-1 failsafe. Yes, you can have the channel that turns the GV-1 on/off go to fail safe (whether you choose the switch method or the throttle position method) but you don't know if the GV-1 will let go unless you turn off the Tx to simulate the loss of signal. I have the GV-1 set at a low rpm since the head is spinning without the blades.

Once I dug out the battery, I did a test discharge and there was still over 1000 ma left in the battery, so the loss wasn't due to the battery.

I can't speak about the wiring harness and on since all that is a pile of goop...

Crash and Burn

I know a guy who lives in Missouri. His 2 gallon old, OS Wc, Mille crashed and burned. I really don't think it is just a "Fury" thing. At first when someone reported that the clutch caught on fire, I was a little quick to dismiss it. I was thinkng that the battery shorted and I know that'll do it. These batts are storing alot of energy and can get very hot very fast!

ps..I'm not for redesigning a clutch for one that might not last as long.

My crash and near burn was caused by the Switch harness. My switch died in mid flight and that caused the heli to cream in.

I was using the small Futaba switch harness. or should I say the one that came standard with my 9C.

For what I can tell my switch was a problem child for a while and it took a dramatic crash to really be able to nail it down.

I have since switched to the JR Gold switch for now, I plan on going to an electronic switch soon. It fails to the ON position.

Man i tell you what im not realy sure how id take a total loss like that on my fury no less ...geezz i realy think it would hurt to the point of leaving the heli thing for like 3 months ..not so much the fire but the lost money ..2500 bucks just dont grow on the tree .....sorry about the fury..

Helinuts - the heli is not the reason we're in this hobby (although we think it is). If you poll most people about items they would want on a deserted island, the heli wouldn't be at the top of the list.

It's the friends that you make that share your interest that keeps you going. I've had over a dozen people offer to loan me helis, and even a couple of the airplane pilots in my club offered me a plane until I replace the Fury (if you think my heli flying sux, wait till you see me with a plane - I didn't know the left stick was used for anything until I started flying helis!)

Mike it sounds like you have a great bunch of guys around you. I am very lucky that way to, Last year I was close to getting out of the hobby because to was costing me way to much.

Well a couple close buds that I fly with went in together and bought me a R60 that came fully loaded and gave it to me for Xmas. The heli was alot cheaper to repair then the vigor I was flying and saved me.

They did this not because of the heli but because of friend ship. Since I started this hobby I have met and are friends with so many people it is overwelming at times. I am glad to see that someone else has good friends like this to that would give you the shirt off there back to help you no qustions asked.

Isn't nitro an oxidizer?

With enough oxidizer and heat on the clutch bell, couldn't it burn?

Just a thought,

MFendley, Check the "sw cd" funciton in the gv-1, it lets you know if the gv-1 is working or not while on the bench. Your in the hobby for the rite reason, quite a few people avoid clubs and one of the biggest reasons the hobby is so enjoyable.

Switch and battery wiring.

I have my .02 to put in here. One time I opened up a Futaba Swith to clean it. It had alittle oil residue on it. I couldn't beleive the poor quality of the solder joints! I no longer trust them. Take them all apart, and resolder them even brand new. In addition I hardwire my battery, Wire only from the switch to the battery ( No Connectors ). One less thing to worry about. May not help the hot Clutch problem, but someone may get use of it.

90 Percent of heli maintance is inspecting and preventing. The other 10 something has already happened.

Hey Brimmer, I will answer for Mike cause we fly together. It is about 40 minutes north of Jacksonville, Fl on I-95. 3 exits north of the Georgia/Florida state line.

Actually any of the first three exits will take you to Saint Marys. We are also about 25 minutes south of Brunswick.

Glenn - hopefully I'll be ordering stuff soon, so I'll have something to fly when WE go to the SC fun fly

It seems as if you guys have a great little heli community there. I was hoping you would be close by so I could check it out. Unfortunately, I'm way over on the other side of the state (near Columbus and Macon).
