The Rocket has been put to one side

I spent a couple of hours trying to get the motor to run properly yesterday, with no success.

Today my new turbine heli arrived, so the Rocket is in a corner waiting for a spare moment.

I love those late X-mas presents!!
I guess we won't be hearing to much from you for awhile Peter. You going to do a buildup on your website? I would definatly like to see one.

Today I took the turbine heli and went to the field to play. I had given the Rocket to my buddy Dale to try and sort out the motor and he arrived a little later on, looking pleased with himself. He said he had the motor running a lot better.

He fired it up and he hovered it a while and it sounded sweet at about 1700 rpm. The light was very bad and he was nervous about flying it, so he shoved the Tx in my hands and told me to get on with it. A quick hover showed it to be a very stable heli, and very controlable, which surprised me after what I had read. I gingerly fed it into forward flight and I suppose by the time I landed, it was scooting around at about 60mph, at about 1/2 throttle in normal mode. This is NOT how this heli was designed to be flown.

A little later on it brightened up some and Dale felt confident enough to have another go. He soon had the thing whistling around at about 70 -80 mph on full throttle, but still in normal. Then he was bringing it in downwind for a landing, tail well down to try and stop it, when the motor quit.

One ugly auto later and it had a very bent tail boom, driveshaft, T/R pushrod and two bent blades. Everything else seemed to be ok. So, its back to the drawing board for a while. I guess I will be flying it from now on as he will be nervous of breaking it again, so I will see what the spares situation is tomorrow.

PS Turbine Rock!!!

Update

Well guys, been out of touch with this site for a good while now - too busy enjoying myself! (New computer as well ).

The ThreeDeeNT has been thrown about quite a bit since the last posting - even to the point of the first 'arrival' due to a complete failure of the tail. I went up to do a 540 stall turn, the thing did a 360 and then went back round the other way 180 - I knew I was in trouble as even though it looked like a pretty cool manouvre, it wasn't me controlling the thing. I came down carefully with the intention of landing for a quick inspection but on a gentle turn on the landing pattern, the tail started to turn uncontrollably. All I could do was to watch and fight to the 'bitter' end.

It didn't really take that long to take the thing apart to see what the whole damage was and the new bits were sitting on the bench within a week apart from the gears for those S9206 servo's (which only arrived last week after several attemps to get hold of them over 6 weeks ). The cost of the damage could've seen a new Raptor sitting on the bench, but then I wouldn't have the best helicopter to fly would I? All the bits needed came to less than a 3rd of the new cost which wasn't as much as I had anticipated since the crash took out a lot of the mechanics. I took the opportunity of switching to a yellow canopy as I thought it would be easier to see - and easier to paint a dark bit on .

Initially I put the crash down to the clevis on the tail servo coming off (I had been giving the tail a bit of stick particularly in fast climbing out inverted pirouette's - great way of escaping a bad bit of inverted hover practice, but since visiting Sandown Park again this year and seeing the same clevis on Jan's model I don't know now - I also noticed two rollers on the tail belt to get rid of the static build up and since that belt runs millimeters from the tail servo I suppose it might have been an electrical failure. Jan was saying that he'd run the model up at night and could see the 'blue light' coming from the drive end of the boom belt caused by static!

I have fitted ball links to the tail control now just in case it was the clevis but will have to take things easy for a few flights to satisfy myself that the problem won't come back.

I flew it again on Sunday (carefully) for the first time in absolutely ages and can't wait till next weekend to get thrashing around again.

Our club put a review I wrote on our website recently so if anyone's interested, it's at http://www.tmfc.org.uk/reviews/3d.html although I haven't got the latest 'paintwork' pic up yet - I think it looks better in yellow .

I was just getting in to the hovering inverted bit with it when it went in - this thing just makes getting out of trouble so easy with all the power at your fingertips and the cyclic responses available it really inspires with confidence - all I've got to get over now is seeing those £ signs in the air
