First of all you need a converter to use indoors http://www.fxaeromodels.com/product...roducts_id=1631 .

I'm sure there is a charger out there that has a converter built into it, but I've never seen one.

The top chargers one of these

as noted, VERY VERY few chargers and none of the 'top'
chargers directly connect to wall A/C.

If you're buying a 'top' charger, buy a power supply and be
done w/ it. They're not that expensive.

so plug in chargers are not to be found. and your saying to just buy and ac/dc converter. what do u guys do with the chargers. just clamp em to the truck battery and let the li po charge? or do u get a seperate car battery and hook it uo to that. and if so who do u charge the battery back up . whats the length of charge time. sorry to ask so many questions. crazy how all the chargers are 12 volts. not used to that kinda battery charging. will apache like chargers work well? lol ive allready invested alot so far. just trying to conserve some cash flow. helps with life at home from the wife.

If you're just going to be dealing with nicads, you can't go too wrong with a Litco Alpha4. It will handle 4 packs at a time. Also, it comes with a wallwart or you can use 12v. Ordering opened up yesterday and it looks like you can still order one now. Use to be 10 minutes after ordering opened, it closed.

I bought a Hobico MKII Wed. and thats the same thing I asked, "You mean I've gotta have a 12V car battery to run this ??"

But here's a good solution and one that I use. I had a few old computers laying around and then took out a powersupply from them and used that.

the yellow wire in most power suplies is 12V so I cut all other wires inside the supply at the circuit board level and ran a yellow and black (Ground) out and then clamp onto them with the charger.

Works like a charm !

Radio Shack also sells a switching power supply that works great. The output is the same as a car battery.

The charger you have is probably perfectly OK for the battery you have. I expect the red light turns back green once the battery is charged. Based on the battery you have and the numbers on the charger its going to take just over 2 hours to give the battery a ful charge. If you're trying to save cash, the cheapest charger is the one you already have!

As has been mentioned by others, none of the really good chargers include a 110V input. I use a bench supply (13.2V 10A) for most charging in the workshop, but I sometimes use my 12V deep cycle battery, even in the 'shop (when 10A isn't going to be enough). If you get interested in high power electrics, you'll end up getting your own deep cycle battery. (Dont want to risk running the car/truck flat so it wont start do you? 2 charges on a big lipo pack will empty the average car battery, and starting batteries aren't design to be deep cycled, so you'll also kill the battery quickly).

I have been reading this thread closely and can tell you that for the money there asking for chargers 200 to 400 plus dollars it better come with an AC adapter. I really don't see the benefits in buying a 200 dollar charger and then going to radio shack or any other LHS to buy a converter for 50.00 plus. I have seen chargers for 100.00 plus that plug into A.C. and that makes more sense to me because you don't have to worry about buying a converter. Something else to lug around. I too am looking for a charger but I would like to have it A.C. and if it has a D.C. outlet too thats a plus. I charge my batterys at home, I never leave home without them Jimmi

I have the mrc 977, charges two packs at once and comes with a ac power supply. Charges up to 3cell lipos and nicad/nimh lead acid and pretty much anything you could want to charge.

Hey Rob
I'm leaning towards an MRC but I think its gonna be the newer 989. 2 batterys at once with an AC power supply and up to 3 cell suits my needs just fine.
If its not the newest Mrc it will be an Mrc regardless unless something else out there is better. Jimmi

Most of the $400 chargers are aimed at charging at the flying field. They also started out as nicad/nimh chargers aimed at high performance electric sailplanes (F5B). Nobody flying these would ever charge at home as the battery still needs to be warm from charging when used.

The way they were expected to be used, an AC input would have just been dead weight.

That's not to say there isn't a need for a charger for large lipos that can run from AC power, its just an explanation of the thinking behind the high end 12V only chargers.

the 989 will charge up to 8s lipo, but it only does one pack at a time. since the trex flys on 3s, the 977 seems like the better bet as I was going to wait for the new one too.

hey what about this charger..saw it a few weeks ago and might pick it up. Plugs into the wall and seems like its pretty simple to use. Good price as well I think. Its called the Integy INDI 16X-Lithium AC/DC Charger

seems like a LOT of $$$ for such a simple limited use charger.

you'd be better off getting an Astro 109 for $10 if all you want to
do is Liithium.
