Man.... did ya see that thing...? Looked like it got nuked.

ColeopTer, you weren't trying out that new 100% CP were you?

It's a shame to see a nice bird shot down in flames.

I hope it wasn't spontanious combustion.

Dumb thumbs...

Well, first he put it in by madly piroetting around the sky at dusk, after a few minutes of barely maintaining control and trying to be a show-off. After he had planted it, they put it in the back of a Gator. Now I dont know this for sure, but I believe the heli ignited some gasoline that was in the back of the Gator (my guess is it was the hot muffler touching it). I cant say this for sure as I was 100 yards away when it happened, but I know that the Gator in question had had gas spilled in it, and the heli wasn't on fire before they put it in the back. Maybe one of the 20 people who ran after it with cameras can give you a better idea The guy from SKS video also said he got some video of everyone running out to see the fire. Should be quite comical and make this year's IRCHA video a must see At least his other heli didnt catch fire when he did the same thing with it the next morning. Now that was some big time SMACKDOWN!!!

You wouldn't be the only one... he was the butt of every joke imaginable this weekend, from the novices to the top pilots. People need to learn that you don't have to try and show off and fly 3 steps above your ability to be accepted in this hobby. Fly at your level and have fun. Its ALOT cheaper and not quite so embarrasing. That's my $.02.

I was one of the first people to the heli along with Augusto. The heli was on fire as was the grass on the field. Augusto put it in the back of the gator because he didn't want more grass catching on fire (unfortunately I was in the gator). The video probably shows me running away like a little kid. Maybe next year the gators and golf carts should have fire extinguishers onboard just for such rare ocassions. We could have had the fire out sooner before his heli burned in front of us. Thanks to whoever showed up with the extinguisher. Had a great time at my first IRCHA. Everyone was great and the pilots were all top notch. Already looking forward to next year.

Ahhh, so thats what happened.

Alex...Thanks for clarifying. I agree that fire extinguishers would be a good idea. The fire turned a $300-400 crash into a total loss. The only thing I saw on that heli that could be used again were the flybar paddles

It was great to see the quality level of pilots that were from one end of the flight line to the other! Though machines were crashed, this was definately not a crash fest event filled with "alot" of guys trying to fly 3 steps above their level. Everyone has their own flying styles and that is what makes this hobby/sport so enjoyable.

Alex, you got chanel 38 pin? "It was the other guy with the same name" Man your killing me!!! Good to see ya there buddy!

ColeopTers flight was pretty much a nonstop caos from the time it took off the ground. It was late in the day and was getting harder to see. He did say he lost orentation. The 6' flames impressive from the flight line!! Happens to everyone. I believe Saturdays crash was a tail gear box failure. Sorry man for the total loss!

Fire extinguisher

It was quite funny to see all the gators and golf carts race out there to see the fire and I had to run out there with the fire extinguisher.

I really need to quit smoking, but at least they gave me a ride back.

I agree totally with what you are saying. It takes a lot of work and pushing yourself to get better, but you also have to work on fundamentals before you jump to the advanced stuff. Of the three flights I saw, all he did was go up 100 feet and piroette like mad, just kinda moving back and forth in the sky constantly catching himself. And 2 of them ended with crashes. When I see someone who one thing like that, it makes me think he's needs some work on some basics before he tries to be Jason Krause. Every expert I have heard, including Curtis, Jason, and Todd emphasize that you should always be control and constantly working on improving your basic skills. Also, we all thought before he crashed that it was foolish to be doing what he was doing late at dusk, when the heli was nothing but a silhouette in the sky. There are definately several lessons to be learned from this (including carrying a fire extinguisher at all times ) And being a safe and smart flyer is definately the most important one. And when everyone around you backs up the minute you start flying, and wathces nervously waiting for a crash, you probably arent as safe as you could be. Again thats my $.02. If you were there than you know what Im talking about. I wasnt badmouthing anyone for trying. Its showing off and flying unsafe that gets me mad. Just like the JR team FAI pilots who think they own three flight stations when they fly, but thats another story.

I also agree that it sucks to lose a $2000 machine, especially when his loss from the crash should have only been about 1/4 that. No one likes to see someone lose money, but again it also happens to all of us. If you think I was rude, you should have seen the 200 pilots asking him to smile and take his picture 5 min after he lost a $2000 heli. I guess thats the price of being infamous.

Yup, you always gotta keep pushing your limits... just remember to try and not push the heli into the ground at the same time

tim is right but my question is can the quy that crashed do a basic hover or ff? i didn't see him do anything but to me out of controled piroette. i felt soory for the quy but yes it was the highlight and the talk of the weekend.

It wasn't my intention to start a thread that lead to flaming Augusto's flying abilities.

I was simply asking what happened to cause a nitro machine to go up in flames like a gasser might.

From all the video I have ever seen ColeopTer is a great pilot...

Augusto, you have my condolences, I know that was a sweet heli and I hate to see it totaled from the fire.

give the man a break

Hey guys

I wasn't there, so maybe I'm way off base, but as long as a guy >isn't< flying in a dangerous manner, and endangering people, so WHAT if his flying seems wild? Five short years ago people would have said the same thing about Jason Krause's flying style. If Augusto wanted to show off a bit, then hey more power to him. That's what everyone in this hobby does, anyways, whether you're flying wild and on the edge, or hangin all kinds of fancy upgrade parts on a machine that only sees a hover. IMO Coleopter is one of the more brilliant guys on this site, even if his flying was a bit radical. Besides, everyone is going to crash, it's only a matter of time.

Sorry for your losses, Augusto. In the last week, I have crashed my three Raptors, and just yesterday, had a minor crash on my mountain bike which broke my kneecap in half. Some days it just don't pay to play.
