I know there are at least a few guys out there that either paint cars for a living or otherwise do enough paint work to be termed at least an expert.

So..........

I'm getting ready to purchase a good HVLP spray gun to clear my canopies. I rather enjoy doing a few canopies a year, even though I know I'll never offset the costs of the purchase. I'm tired of my current high pressure gun blowing up a bunch of dirt and fogging up my booth.

I currently use PPG Stratoclear, and it has produced excellent results even with a simple gun. For the serious gun that I'm looking for, which tip size would you prefer 1.3, 1.4, 1.5mm, etc. This particular clear uses a 2:1 (base:catalyst) mix ratio. I have no plans to shoot anything but clear with this gun. Use use pactra car paint for base colors. I'll buy another gun if I ever decide to shoot color with a gun, or I'll just use my touch up gun.

I have access to Sata, Sharpe, DeVilbiss, and CIA guns. I'm not afraid to spend some money. You get what you pay for as with any tool purchase.

Thanks,

Ben

I am using the Devilbis HVLP gun with the 1.4 tip doing both base coat and clear with the same gun and tip. Thats with BASF, and have never had a problem.

Sata Sata Sata 2000 1.3 the only way to go!!!!!! I am a PPG tec. I have painted on over 4000 cars in the past several years and I have tried every gun on the market. There are a lot of great guns out there Devillbis GTI,GEo,Acuspray and so on.....BUT I have never had any gun last as long as Sata without a rebuild and the 2000 really busts up the clear, the better the attomization the slicker the finished product and the less mil build. but thats just my thought.... I use the Walmec STM HVLP gun from Italy. The 1.2 cap is great for both base and clear coat. I't kind of pricey but it's very controllable during the spray operation. I shoot PPG DCC paints mostly. Chris

Thanks for the info guys. I agree that the real key to and benefit of a really good gun is getting the paint atomized to a fine dot pattern. It seems that with a budget gun, the initial coats come out with a texture (not orange peel, either), and then you have to build product and weight to achieve flow and a slick surface. Also a darn good way to get a sag...

Thanks again for the help.

Ben,
I dont think its necessary for you to spend $400 for a top of line gun for what little paint work your going to do a copy cat Sata sells for under a $100 and i can clear a canopy just as good with it w/ 1.4 cap and you know the work i do any way how are you havent seen you for a while see you this summer

Hey Ray.

We all missed you this past season. Same ole close knit group of people getting together in the evening to BS about anything and everything.

I'm well. Catching up on the model stuff in the off season break from practice.

Do you have a particular Sata knock-off in mind that has proven to be acceptable?

Best regards,

Ben
