Autogyros - Gyrocopters > My new design! Photos attached!

Hey guys!!!

Lets see....where do I begin? OK...here it goes.... I have been playing with autogyros for a few years now. I wanted to design my onw but did not want to copy anyone else design. So...I took all the traits of the the autogyros that I like (1930's style) mushed them together in my head and the photos below sho what i came up with.

48" rotor span, AXI 2820-12 and a 12 X 8 APC prop for power, battery is Polyquest 3200 3cell lipo. It shoul weigh just under 4 lbs.

I hope to have a good flight report soon!

@ 7:15 PM 6/23/2005 My gyro flew for the first time! At first....it was turning to the left. Trimmed that out with roll to the right. Next pass.....boom ...she was air born. I had to trim it quite a bit for down elevator. I had too much pitch programmed in. Then...I just had to get used to it. Found my sweet spot with the throttle for cruising.

I am so happy with it! I will post some photos of her flying and i hope with a movie this week end!

Nothing more satisfying when your design is up in the air and everyone at the park is clapping. Too fun!!!!

Thanks guys! I have had somuch fun with it so far. But....I did get a tail strike the other day....came in high angle of attack.....with the wind which is a no no to begin with. It just struck the out side verticle stabs. I went home made some new ones and went back to flying.

What was so frustrating this past weekend was that I was flying and i could not get anyone to take some photos. My wife tried...but she could not follow the bird in the air. She did get some shots of it on the ground..... Oh well...she tried.

Working on my rotor blades at the momement. Adding more negative pitch to the bottom side so I can spool up faster. My last flight attempt, I had a blade stall and ended up on its side. Live and learn!

I made my new rotor last week. They are freakin sweet!!!! Fast spool up....not much blancing needed.

So...the combo is 3" airfoil shaped balsa from SIG. From the leading edge to the trailing edge measure 2 1/8". So...in other woords, you are cutting off 7/8" off the trailing edge. Now you will notice that the trailing edge is big and fat! On the bottom of the blade....from the trailing edge measure 3/4" and draw a line the length of the blade surface......from the mark drawn, back to the leading edge, this is the part you sand down for negative pitch. leave 1/16 of flat on the trailing edge. Once the negative pitch is done.....on top of the blade, you will blend in an ark that meets the bottom negative pitch. Then....I took a pc. of .093 music wire, bent a small "L" shape on one end. This mounts to the leading edge. It gives strength and the weight helps to keep the blades spinning.

If interested...i can post some diagrams and photos.....let me know.

Could you explain the little gear box below the rotor head?

It is just easy way to mount the rotor head. Nothing more than a Master Airscrew gearbox for a 500 motor. Just screw it down and mount the rotor plate. It has ball bearings in it a just free wheels. Cheap and easy!!!

My autoyro is called the DAG-1. This week I should have some prints done.

Felt bad about my rambling explainations...here is a diagram I did for you all to explain further.

This is really easy to do and you will NOT have to spend BIG $$$$ on a set of gyro blades...do it yourself!!!! It really is easy and you have more satisfaction when it is done!

Ever had a gyro stuck in a tree? I did this past Sunday...had to get a tree service to get her down today! So glad I got it back!

Mistakes that led to the tree situation? Too eager to fly to begin with! Wind was coming in two to three different directions....duh...not good!
I threw it into the wind towards the woods.....as it got closer to the woods, it lost the breeze being cut off by the trees.....I thought it would smash into the trunks....i had to make a quick decision...I gunned it! It did climb above the trees. Just as it cleared, I turned to sharp and she lost altitude in the turn...falling right back into the tree that it had just missed!!!!

Long story short...no damage! My local tree service enjoyed the story and my $$$$

Your design looks just like a real original design my dad had in the seventys for a two place tractor motor in front His was named the JE2 for the owners initials He won new design in 76 at Oshkosh Anyway6s the EICH JE 2 autogiro looks really close to what you have come up with and my dad and I had many flights in his so yours hopefully will fly just as well Good Luck flyboyjimi in Hunt. Thanks flyboy! It flies well. I would like to experiment with the Aerobalsa undercambered blades soon. One of my bad habits for flying in general is I like to turn to the left. My gyro blades turn counterclockwise, so if you make a hard left turn....you loose a lot of lift! The Areobalsa with the undercmbered blades may be the answer to keeping the rotors spinning in a quick turn.

I would like to see some photos of your dad's gyro if you have any! Please post some? That would be awesome!

this is very interesting and looks like a bunch of fun.

Dumb Question: I noticed the blade bolt is set back a bit on the blades. what is the reason for that and what are the effects?

thanks in advance.

I am not sure of what "set back" means. I think you mean that the bolt hole is not centered and is more towards the leading edge? If this is the qyuestion...easy answer: The blades have 3/32 steel wire on the leading edge. The blade has to be balanced lengthways. The wire adds weight to the leading edge, so when it is balanced.....the bolt hole is actually closer to the leading edge. This keeps the plade from tisting in flight. If it twists....you loose lift and sometimes lift happens on the wrong place at the wrong time causing unstable flight.
