Soul,

a) Why do you think DHCP is required? As a real sys admin you should know that it's not.

b) When Mark said "outside", he didn't mean outside the building, he meant outside your corporate LAN, whose boundaries are not set by the bricks of AMA headquarters. They are set by network topology that, from what you've said, I'd hope you were familiar with.

c) If AMA's IT staff can't set aside even just one NAT'd IP for someone to use outside of their corporate LAN, it frightens me that they are my only insurance. Yes, they're a model organization, not an Internet company, but now they have an employee here talking about how un-easy it would be to set up, so I assume they have some sort of IT staff that (at least, think they) know something.

d) I don't read Model Aviation and I don't want it. I would consider it a gesture of good will on my part if the AMA would stop sending it to me and keep my dues the same. That'd save them money. I have enough clutter in my house as it is.

cant help but throw this in.

quote from earlyer post "And I don't think Mark has anything to offer them in trade as lets face it the ama has us pretty much captive"

The fact is that this site is extremely helpful and very much premotes the Heli Hobby. Take me as a example: I feel this site is directly resposible for my sucsess so for in this hobby. Without this site I would have gave up by now. So the new guy feels good about what he has achived and wants to go out and fly where there are others flying. In order to do that he has to be a AMA member. for our 58 bucks a year we get insurance and a script to a cheasy magazine. I am not b*tching about the insurance that is a good thing. They build a awsome building full of stuff and pay for a T1 with the money that we gave them. So in turn there is no reason they couldn't go out of there way a bit to help out. Even if it ment have a System admin sitting there for a bit wile he uploaded a few pics. I wouldn't expect them to let me use there network to browse for p0rn wile I was there, but they could be a bit more helpful for something that provides as much positive information as this site.
Thanks Mark, when it all comes down to it I and alot of other people out here owe you bigtime. Please keep up the good work.

Well I was just pointing out problems with just providing it willy-nilly.

I know someone mentioned something about dhcp. We would have had nothing setup to provide dhcp onto our internet provided interface outside of the firewall.

Also I am not privy to any logistical reasons that AMA might have had for not providing you that connection. There is no outside tap of the internet outside of the building. Just the plain facts. In order to provide that connection to you at that time you would have had to be plugged onto our corporate side of our firewall.

Not trying to be argumentative. I would however like to point out that internet has this year been provided for someone in the heli group. So things change as businesses change.

Hi Soul

Remember that this matter is ancient history (12 months ago). I have given up on the idea. I have had multiple conversations with AMA staff since and at this point I really do not care anymore. Unless you can provide a 24hr air conditioned work area similar to my current solution then I do not need anything from AMA. Thanks for the feedback anyways.

You sure have a nice field.

Mark

Rick,

I hope you never need to file a claim, I didn't say that 58 bucks was alot, but multiply that by all the members and thats pretty substantial. I also have no problem with that amount either, but don't throw us heli hobbiest in the corner as if we don't make a difference, we do to their pockets, and their plush new offices.

True Mark could have called ahead, but on this subject I couldn't agree more with IRQ. Maybe AMA's IT is as old as the magazine that hits my trash every month.

It is not until recently that you have just started to see the heli shops advert. in the magazine, but could they hold just a few like maybe more than one page for an article on heli's, or perhaps the AMA could take a picture or two of major events and publish a nice little blurb about it.

I agree with you about the AMA. They do not treat us very well and the Magizine leaves a lot to be desired. But without the Insurance a Lot of RC sites will be forced to close. It would be very nice for another insurance company to come along and compete with the AMA.

I agree, Rick... I remember reading, maybe a year ago, about some non-AMA insurance organization starting up, and that they had one field in California somewhere? Anyone have further info?

hang in there sar, just drink a big glass of gatorade and count to ten! as far as mark ryder's efforts i applaud them to the fullest(and yes i will be looking you up sat.) as far as ama is concerned i wish there was another orginisation that could maybe or will be attempted or at least we could flood the editor of the mag. with a bunch of heli related articles to a point where they can't be ignored. maybe some useless advice like they do for plank pilots like tourque specs for certain cap screws, how to preserve rubber bands for the next flight! if ya get my drift! just flood the editor with useless info maybe they might get the point!! ken

flipped2left,

Dude, the world needs LESS FUD, not MORE. As much as I don't like some of the BS Soul is emitting here, we don't need garbage like what you just said. The man made no comments about war, terrorism, Iraqis, or government policies. Keep that crap out of threads where it is off-topic.

Insurance to replace AMA

Has anyone inquired about "United Modelers of America" . They advertise insurance for all modeling activities for $38.00 per year?
