What do you guys think about hitec's gyros? I've got an Airwolf with Falcon mech in it and I need to buy a gyro for it. Would Hitec work well with scale? And which gyro? Single rate or Dual rate gain?

I wouldn't venture away from the Futaba line myself, especially for a scale bird.
The 401 and it's switchable capabilities is ideal for scale. Realistic take-offs in normal switch to to HH for show stopping stability when hovering. Not saying Hitec is no good but, I won't run their Servos

I have a Hitec Eclipse 7, and the heli has retracts. I won't have an extra channel for the HH switch. So should I have the 401 in heading hold all the time?

try the 240

Try the Futaba 240.

Its the same size as the 401 and is just like the 401 in most areas except the following:

1. no remote gain (adjusts with a pot)
2. no digital servo support
3. no HH/rate switching from the TX (there is a DIP switch on the gyro)

I used one on my ECO 8 electric heli (with a Hitec servo )

The tail was rock solid even with a slow servo. I would not hesitate to use one on any heli..

In fact: One day, the gyro died on our Bergen Industrial Twin (a $4000 heli), and the 240 held the tail just great.

The 240 is a great Gyro but, if you leave it in HH mode you have to wriggle the tail back and forth to center the Gyro. You can get it worked out so that no one but you sees the slight wriggle.
It holds well, same technology as the 401.
It would be a good choice

_______________________________
When you turn your electronics on the 240 centers itself. When you walk out to the flight line or move at all you will want to recenter it so it takes off straight. For scale flying it is important.
You do this by moving the stick side to side 3 or 4 times.

2. no digital servo support

So spincycl, you're saying that it will not work with digital servos? Because the airwolf has a hitec digital on the tail. And it looks like the 240 will be the one of choice.

It will work with the Digital Servo. You just won't be coming close to the potential the digital servo has. The 401 operates at 270Hz the 240 operates at 70Hz. It will still be a very good combination.
