e-Ark X-400 - MX400 > My X400 is morphing into a TRex!!!

Ever since I got this X400 I wanted it to perform at least similar to my Trex
as I considered them relatively comparable. But in the process of upgrading this and that to make it work right I find that I now almost have another TRex.
Thus far I have had to change to:
TRex tail rotor blades and holders
TRex tail pitch slider
TRex tail rotor drive gear and shaft
TRex tail boom
TRex tail servo boom clamps
TRex tail rotor drive gear
TRex main AR drive gear
TRex blades
TRex balls and links everywhere
TRex motor pinion
The X400 is perfoming better but with all of the changes but at this point
I am wondering what was the point of getting a X400 other than a fairly nice
albeit tad heavy metal frame?

cmon, you can't count half of those as "upgrades". a pinion is a pinion, as is blades, boom etc. it flys no different with these as standard.

the only thing i found the x400 needs is the trex paddles and the XL canopy. i have a "trex pinion, stretch kit, blades etc". doesn't make it a trex though. it's just becuase i wanted those items.

Heavy metal frame?

I personally thought that it was on the light side.

I agree with Raptorheli2, all that is needed is the lighter paddles for quicker cyclic and the XL canopy which i ordered today, I personally think all the other parts are not necessary, some are nice to have like the stretch kit but still its not necessary.

PS. The lighter paddles are only needed if your into 3d, if not into 3d then the x400 paddles are sweet for some smooth flying about.

I'm not talking upgrades or stretch kits here, I am talking getting the tail to stop wagging as far as the tail parts go - I put all those tail parts in and the wagging largely went away. Granted, the tail boom could have stayed but the brown looked bad with my blue color scheme and the silver went better but a tail boom mounted servo sure is a better way to go.
The gear changes were done to get a large main gear so that the motor could run at higher rpm off the 4S lipos - I was down to an 8T(A TRex 8T!!!) with the X400 and still could not get my Hacker to run in it's high rpm comfort zone. The bigger TRex gear does the trick.
Again, this was not a critique of the entire X400 population - mearly a disclosure that MY X400 was changing.

they are all changing. there are a few things on this that needs fixed. the trex is no different in this respect. trex people want the x400 frames and we want the trex paddles etc. swings in roundabouts it seems.

my x400 tail doesn't wag but it does drift, but i think thats a gyro issue. i don't have enough time on it to be able to tell. i keep crashing it.

i also have 4s pro lites and the power is amazing which is part of the tail problem as it was fine with less power.

cheers

You may have hit on the crux of my problem - I would bet that this thing would have flown great out of the box had I built it stock but of course I had to hit it with a hot motor, Lipo setup, and all those ball links right off. Maybe "leave well enough alone" might have applied here. I am starting to like what I am ending up with though.

the trex manages to handle this amount of power so it is feasable to get the x400 to manage it. perhaps the trex gear ratio for the tail would be better, i assume the trex tail gearing allows it to run faster. never really checked o be honest. i'm confident the gain will fix it once i rebuild it AGAIN.

cheers

In my opinion the perfect heli may be a hybrid of the two (but still more X-400). The X-400 frame and control system is top notch as is; no changes required unless you go CCPM to save some additional weight. What I don't like about the X-400 are plastic balls on the tail grips and the tail pitch slider. I'm replacing both with T-Rex 450XL parts. The X-400 landing gear stinks too so my long term plan is to fabricate an Aluminum bracket and use aftermarket T-Rex gear. I've also got a T-Rex metal washout assembly and CCPM swashplate on the way. Why not the the swashplate from Ark? Cuz they don't have a washout assembly yet and I want my swash and washout assembly to match

The great thing about these two helis is how easy it is to swap parts between the two and use upgrade parts for one on the other. After all, the have the same lineage.
